On Friday, June 28th in Piazzetta Pier Paolo Pasolini the winners of Il Cinema Ritrovato Blu-ray and DVD Awards 2024 were announced. The competition was open to DVDs and Blu-rays released between February 2023 and March 2024 of critically acclaimed films made before 1994.

The jury, composed by Lorenzo Codelli, Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, Philippe Garnier, Pamela Hutchinson, Miguel Marías and Paolo Mereghetti (president) assigned the following awards.

Damien Chazelle arriva al festival Il Cinema Ritrovato: il regista è atteso domani, sabato 29 giugno, a Bologna per incontrare il pubblico alle ore 19 al Cinema Modernissimo e presentare in Piazza Maggiore, alle ore 21.45, il musical Les Parapluies de Chebourg (interpretato da Catherine Deneuve, immagine di questa 38ª edizione del Cinema Ritrovato), realizzato nel 1964 da Jacques Demy e citato in più occasioni nel film con il quale Damien Chazelle sbancò agli Oscar 2017, La La Land.

Il giorno seguente, domenica 30 giugno, Damien Chazelle tornerà sul palco di Piazza Maggiore per presentare il suo più recente Babylon.

Moving from cinema to cinema during Il Cinema Ritrovato has never been easier. From Saturday 22 June to Saturday 29 June a shuttle service by City Red Bus (an electric vehicle with 13 spaces) is available to all festival pass holders. The service will go between Piazzetta Pasolini and Cinema Modernissimo (and back) with four stops along the way in the vicinity to other festival locations. Durante una conversazione con Juho Kuosmanen, seguita alla sonorizzazione dal vivo della trilogia finlandese Mykkätrilogia, Alice Rohrwacher - intervenendo in video a proposito del futuro del cinema e di quello muto in particolare - ha rilasciato un'anteprima sul suo prossimo progetto cinematografico: si tratterà infatti di un film muto!

The 1904: A Fabulous Year programme - previously scheduled on Sunday June 23rd, cancelled due to bad weather - will be shown at Piazzetta Pasolini on Thursday, June 27th, 10pm, with the piano accompaniment by Stephen Horne and on the drums, Frank Bockius. As audiences in Piazzatta Pasolini will discover, they will become spellbound by the carbon-arc projector and the (magical) re-enactment of a cinematographic screening as it would have been 120 years ago.

In honour of Cineteca founder, Vittorio Boarini awards are given to international figures who have distinguished themselves in the safeguarding and diffusion of cinema heritage. This year the award went to Grover Crisp (Sony), Bryony Dixon (BFI) e Daniela Michel (Morelia International Film Festival).

Il Cinema Ritrovato Book Fair is a unique meeting place for readers, writers, scholars, critics and lovers of cinema. Saturday, June 22nd - Cinema Modernissimo

#Reservation | In case of rain, when indicated in the programme, Cinema Modernissimo and Cinema Jolly will host the Piazza Maggiore screenings. For this reason, some of the evening screenings scheduled at the Modernissimo and Jolly cinemas are currently unavailable to book because they may be cancelled in favour of the screenings in Piazza Maggiore. Closer to the dates, with the confirmation of good weather, it will be possible to continue booking the original screenings. Day by day, after having confirmed the weather forecast, we will open the possibility to book these screenings. As is the case today with Peeping Tom. It all begins in Piazza Maggiore, known all over the world as a cinephiles’ temple. Thursday 20 June, My Cousin (1918), the only surviving film featuring Enrico Caruso, who plays two roles, will be screened with a new score composed by Daniele Furlati and performed by a musical ensemble from Teatro Comunale di Modena, including a sequence where we will hear the voice of the great tenor. On Monday 24, Kote Mikaberidze’s Chemi bebia (My Grandmother, 1929) will be accompanied by the Finnish trio Cleaning Women and an explosive and overwhelming score!

Hans Deppe’s 1950 Schwarzwaldmädel (The Black Forest Girl) and 1951 Grün ist die Heide (The Heath Is Green) are commonly discussed as the beginning of early Federal Republic of Germany cinema’s Heimatfilm craze. In some ways this is understandable: Schwarzwaldmädel was one of the first locally crafted massive box-office successes, as well as the first colour fiction feature produced in FRG. The Heimatfilm dominated FRG and Austrian cinema for five or six years before the wave ebbed out and started to mutate into other genres – the foreground, we could say, became a background. In its heyday and long after, the genre was vilified by critics as the epitome of brainless entertainment with a deeply reactionary core.

For a filmmaker associated primarily with the South Caucasus, Sergei Parajanov made most of his films in Ukraine. After graduating from VGIK in Moscow, he became an employee of Dovzhenko Film Studio in Kyiv.

Female subjugation within patriarchal society, either literally intended or as an allegory of a totalitarian regime, is one of the themes that runs most consistently through the new restorations presented this year. We start with two cornerstones of feminist cinema at the wane of the 1970s: La Nouba des femmes du Mont Chenoua and Khak-e Sar bé Mohr. Assia Djebar in Algeria and Marva Nabili in Iran – through her film will be completed in the US – both succeed in creating a feminine cinematic space through their own distinctive formal research.

Gustaf Molander made almost 70 films in a career that lasted more than half a century (1917-1968), and his trajectory as a director is parallel to that of the development of the Swedish film industry. He wrote the script to Terje Vigen (Victor Sjöström, 1917), which was the starting point of the golden Age of Swedish silent cinema, and he directed the era’s epilogue with the Selma Lagerlöf adaptations Ingmarsarvet (1925) and its sequel Till Österland (1926). He was one of very few Swedish directors, who handled the transition to sound successfully, as proven by En natt (1931) and En kvinnas ansikte (1938), the latter arguably the best Swedish film of the 1930s.

Mariann Lewinsky once aptly described the A Hundred Years Ago strand as a “travel agency, organising excursions into the past”. So, what are the main “sights” festival attendees can look forward to on their guided tour through the year 1924? The year 1924 marks the end of Swedish silent cinema’s golden age with the release of Gösta Berlings saga, which we are fittingly presenting in a new digital restoration. After this film, his last made in Sweden, Mauritz Stiller joined fellow countryman Victor Sjöström at the newly formed MGM studios in Hollywood. Sjöström’s second American feature, He Who Gets Slapped, continues our spotlight on “filmigration”, as does J’ai tué!, a French production featuring Japanese star Sessue Hayakawa, then on self-imposed exile from Hollywood allegedly due to rising anti-Japanese sentiment.

Cinema is the art of us, of the individual who is multiplied. Would Marlene Dietrich have existed without Josef von Sternberg? The “Lubitsch touch” without the actors? If you don’t believe us, try to see one of the great character actor in the history of cinema, Felix Bressart, made famous by Ernst Lubitsch, in Nie wieder Liebe! (No More Love), the first film in the Litvak retrospective. Tilda Swinton, starring in The Protagonists, said that with Luca Guadagnino, here in his directorial debut, she felt like family: “We are brother and sister, playmates. Ours is an ongoing conversation.”

This year we present a rough guide through the developments and usages of colours in small-gauge filmmaking. The journey starts with tinted 16mm vintage prints from the 1920s and continues in the 1930s with amateur films. Thanks to lenticular colour motion picture processes like Kodacolor and monopack multilayer films like Kodachrome, colour became surprisingly more common in small-gauge cinema compared to commercial films made in 35mm.

Within the context of a festival, classic cinema transforms, taking on another form, another body, leaving behind the comforting dimension of neutral replicability, a shift into performance art. Cinema comes alive through the film reels—worn or restored to their original splendor—shining in various formats from 16 to 35 to 70mm, emerging from the projectors that bring them to life… A festival is a living celebration of cinema, requiring technical and logistical expertise, harmonious action, and management of the unexpected. And—in all this delicate vitality—let's not forget a fundamental aspect of The Seventh Art: the music.

After all these years, have we Rediscovered Cinema? The answer is obvious: we’re still searching! The 2024 edition makes this abundantly clear, with sections such as Dark Heimat, which explores a genre usually considered minor but which actually contains the ghosts and the unspoken of post-Nazi Germany and Austria, Cinemalibero, and The Colours of Small Gauge Cinema, in which each film is a celebration, a surprise, the return of vanished works which, thanks to our festival, now begin a new life.

Let's put aside for a moment names such as Catherine Deneuve, Robert De Niro, Marlene Dietrich, Harvey Keitel, Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, Charles Aznavour, Gian Maria Volonté, Robert Redford, Paul Newman, and so forth; famous faces who adorn the festival's ‘Restored and Restored’ section, films that are dusted off and brought back into the limelight. Instead Il Cinema Ritrovato invites you to get to know the sections devoted to two authors, Anatole Litvak and Gustaf Molander; lesser known to the general public but whose expansive film portfolios hold several surprises, especially for their choice of protagonists. Discover the programmes of these two sections which are overflowing with actors and actresses of high calibre, whether during their first time in front of the camera, in secondary roles accompanying other stars, or at a time in their career when they are yet to reach their peak.

"Film festivals are often assumed to be solely designed to showcase brand new films – but this isn’t always the case. Every year, festivals such as Sundance, Cannes and Venice debut forthcoming titles, the majority of which are in need of distribution, with the eye firmly fixed on the future. But there’s one festival that the most die-hard film fan should have on their radar: Il Cinema Ritrovato".

Kozaburo Yoshimura (1911-2000) is one of the neglected masters of classical Japanese film. He was responsible for some of the postwar Japanese cinema’s most compelling dramas, which bear eloquent witness to social change in a rapidly modernising and Westernising country.

For eight days even our budding cinephiles will have the chance to be involved in the festival, attending screenings, shows and workshops. This year Il Cinema Ritrovato Kids will pay tribute to claymation artist Fusako Yusaki and to Portuguese animation, with a programme curated by the Cinemateca Portuguesa; also, among others, a 1980s RSI-produced special on The world’s most beautiful fairy tales and a selection of animated shorts from two important festivals such as Annecy and Clermont-Ferrand. A series of workshops dedicated to animation and pre-cinema will enrich the programme.

An internationally successful director who played a crucial role in key periods of Italian cinema history (neorealism, commedia all’italiana) and is beloved of filmmakers around the world (including those you would least expect, like Wes Anderson), Pietro Germi nonetheless came across as a surly, aloof filmmaker, whose vision of gender relations was considered to be politically incorrect and who was viewed with deep suspicion by the left-wing cultural establishment.

Films about cinema, recent documentaries and classics brought back to live on the big screen in their restored versions. Among the latter, the three short films shot by a young Stanley Kubrick in the early 1950s and four films by Lionel Rogosin, on the centenary of his birth, an exponent of the most explicitly socially-analytical and politically-critical offshoot of New American Cinema.

This year’s Il Cinema Ritrovato programme once again recognises important female figures in the history and making of cinema: important for their luminosity, talent, freedom, charisma, influence, creativity, political consciousness; masters of their artwork and themselves.

The festival has plenty of these names in the programme. Here, we present five indispensable protagonists of the 38th edition of Il Cinema Ritrovato.

Marlene Dietrich has been celebrated, debated, photographed and, of course, shown on film to such an extent over the last century that, for many European and North American audiences, her first name suffices to introduce her.

A Fabulous Year! While an impressive number of long and well structured documentaries were being produced by Pathé or Urban, technically open-minded clergymen were filming extensively in Egypt, Turkey and Palestine.

Storytelling has always been linked to the ability to rework and rewrite, leading to moments of rebirth. Cinema is no exception.

A story unfolds and is transformed into a cinematic narrative whether from world events (and how those events are told) or from personal reflections that later emerge. Existing stories in different mediums, whether as a book, a work of art, or a video game, take on another life on the cinematic screen. Even a musical composition can be transformed.

However, let’s concentrate on literature and its relation to cinema. Again this year, several of the programme’s films derive from books: at times the book itself is more well-known than the film, at other times the opposite; the question remains the same, which is better, the book or the film?

This year, even more so than in previous editions, we received hundreds of proposals for new and fascinating restorations. At the end of a lengthy selection process, we drew up a festival programme in which each and every spectator will be able to attain a state of cinematic bliss.

One of Il Cinema Ritrovato's guardian angels has left us. David Bordwell, film historian, teacher, and writer, passed away on February 29, leaving us with a legacy suffused with illumination, intellectual sobriety, precision, and a scientific approach to film that never lacked passion and conviction.

His books are the standard texts on film history, film style, and film criticism all over the world. They have been translated into numerous languages, from Persian to Chinese, from Greek to Hungarian and Italian, leaving their mark in every classroom that cinema was ever taught, in the quiet moment of any cinephile who delved deeper into the brilliance of this art form.

With another edition of Il Cinema Ritrovato done and dusted, we look at the musicians who made numerous screenings and events more than special. Each artist brought their talent and creativity to the stage, enriching the screenings with their extraordinary musical performances.

They accompanied the silent films of the 1903 and 1923 sections, and not only in the cinemas, musicians took to the stage in Piazza Maggiore and Auditorium Manzoni in front of thousands of spectators with the screenings of Stella Dallas by Henry King and Lady Windermere's Fan by Ernst Lubitsch.

The 37th edition of Il Cinema Ritrovato festival has come to an end and we can rightly say that the art of cinema is not dead. With a 12% increase in spectators across the festival venues – almost always sold out – and approximately 5,000 festival pass holders prevailing from 51 countries worldwide, Il Cinema Ritrovato and the Cineteca di Bologna bring to a close another special edition of the festival. On the ninth day, the final screening to see out the festival was David Lynch’s A Straight Story, shown on Piazza Maggiore’s big screen. A post-festival programme of restored classics will be shown in the coming days in Piazza Maggiore, including the poster film of the festival Quién sabe? on Tuesday 4th July at 9.45 pm.

The Straight Story closes Il Cinema Ritrovato 2023 in Piazza Maggiore. The film will be introduced by Mary Sweeney, the film’s producer and screenwriter and long-time David Lynch collaborator. The screening in Piazza Maggiore will close the 37th edition of Il Cinema Ritrovato; however, the last day of the festival (Sunday, July 2nd) will also feature repeats of some of this year’s most important titles, at Cinema Arlecchino: Macario, Rysopis, One Way Passage, Love Me Tonight, Quién sabe? and Fear and Desire.

The second edition of the award named after the founder and long-time director of Cineteca di Bologna, Vittorio Boarini, a pioneer in the field of restoration, a scholar of contemporary cinema and art, an educator, critic and infectiously energetic disseminator of culture who passed away in 2021. The award is given to international figures who, like Vittorio, have distinguished themselves in the safeguarding and diffusion of cinema heritage.

Due to the bad weather on the evening of Friday 30 June, the screening of Lady Windermere's Fan, which will be accompanied by the Teatro Comunale orchestra, will be moved to the Teatro Auditorium Manzoni, start time at 9.45 pm.

A second screening of Lady Windermere's Fan, accompanied on piano by Daniel Sosin, will be shown at Cinema Arlecchino with the start time of 10.15 pm. 

The 37th edition of the festival promoted by the Cineteca di Bologna dedicates a retrospective to the director Jonathan Nossiter: after the world premiere at the Cinema Ritrovato in 2020, Last Words returns to Il Cinema Ritrovato on Saturday 1 July, at 9 pm. 30 at Cinema Lumière, the final event of the tribute to Jonathan Nossiter that will open today, Thursday 29 June, again at 9.30 p.m. at Cinema Lumière, with the screening of the film Sunday, directed by Nossiter in 1997, presented by the director himself and by a special guest: the actor Matt Dillon.

Twice Palme d’Or winner at Cannes in only five years, currently President of the jury on the Croisette: Swedish director Ruben Östlund is one of the guests at the 37th edition of Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival.

Östlund will be both a guest and a teacher during his stay in Bologna, with the International Filmmaking Academy, in a long stage on the set involving 20 young directors from all over the world, who will shoot short films under the guidance of Östlund himself. During Il Cinema Ritrovato, Östlund will hold a Cinema Lesson (Thursday 29, 7 pm - Auditorium - DAMSLab, in collaboration with the International Filmmaking Academy of Bologna and MAST) and will present his film The Square (Monday 3 July, 9.45 pm) in Piazza Maggiore; on 2 July at 8.45 pm the director will be onstage at the Arena Puccini to present Triangle of Sadness.

Da lunedì 26 a venerdì 30 giugno, ogni giorno alle 19.00, Hollywood Party - la storica trasmissione di Rai Radio3 dedicata al cinema - racconterà la trentasettesima edizione del Cinema Ritrovato. Anche quest'anno i grandi film del passato torneranno alla luce nella maestosa sala all'aperto allestita in Piazza Maggiore e in diverse sedi della città con oltre 400 proiezioni, conferenze, dibattiti e mostre. La trasmissione, con la conduzione di Steve Della Casa da Bologna e di Efisio Mulas dagli studi Rai di Roma, sarà aperta al pubblico e andrà in onda dal Cortile della Biblioteca Renzo Renzi presso la piazzetta Pier Paolo Pasolini, uno dei cuori pulsanti del festival.

Wim Wenders, revolutionary director of New German Cinema, maker of atypical documentaries and great cinephile, will be a guest and a protagonist at this year’s festival Il Cinema Ritrovato for what are sure to be four captivating events.

African Archives: What Next? is the title of the conversation that will bring together representatives from a variety of institutes and film archives, as well as Alain Sembène, son of Ousmane. At the centre of the discussion, moderated by Cecilia Cenciarelli, will be the urgency for a profound recognition of African film heritage and the responsibilities for its conservation.

You can attend the festival by purchasing one of the existing types of Festival Passes. Although some passes come with certain privileges over others, any type of festival pass would give you access to festival venues and screenings for the entire duration of Il Cinema Ritrovato.

After purchasing the Pass, you’ll receive a unique code that will be needed for booking your seats in advance, subject to availability. The ticket booking system will be activated in early June. You should be able to book your favourite screenings in advance.

If you don’t have a festival pass but still want to attend some of the screenings, depending on availability, some tickets will go on sale (check the website for the list of the available events) which can be purchased online or at the Bologna Welcome, the tourist office located in Piazza Maggiore. Bologna Welcome’s opening hours are Monday to Saturday from 9:00 to 18:30 and Sundays and banks holidays from 10:00 to 16:30.

Access to the Piazza Maggiore screenings is free. However, subject to availability, the accredited festival attendees will have priority access to a reserved area in which they can claim a seat no later than 30 minutes before the start of the screening.

Il Cinema Ritrovato is a cinephile's paradise - matter of fact - and the festival offers, through its programme, screenings and events - starting from restored classics (but also from archives, rediscovered films, lectures, meetings with filmmakers and experts) - that celebrate and allow the public to refine their passion for the seventh art. Ha saputo raccontare il nostro Sud come pochi altri: i suoi documentari sul Mondo perduto, quel mondo in cui la pesca del tonno era una lotta corpo a corpo tra uomini e abitanti del mare, quel mondo in cui quegli stessi uomini scendevano agli inferi della Terra per estrarre lo zolfo, quei documentari, dicevamo, sono una delle testimonianze visive più preziose di un’Italia arcaica. Vittorio De Seta avrebbe compiuto 100 anni il prossimo 15 ottobre, e la Cineteca di Bologna lo ricorda presentando alla 37ª edizione del festival Il Cinema Ritrovato (24 giugno – 2 luglio) il restauro di uno dei suoi film più significativi, l’esordio al lungometraggio nel 1961: Banditi a Orgosolo.

In 2024, the production company Praesens-Films will be 100 years old. A unique case in the history of Swiss cinema, the company is still active as a distributor. It produced most of the national cinema’s biggest successes, including such popular films as Luigi Comencini’s Heidi, and conquered Hollywood. It also won no less than three Oscars, including one for the screenplay of Marie-Louise (1944), written by Richard Schweizer and directed by Leopold Lindtberg, which deals with the French children hosted in Switzerland during the war.

Between 1930 and 1939, when Alexander Korda teamed him with Emeric Pressburger for The Spy in Black, Michael Powell had returned to a wintry England from his apprenticeship with Rex Ingram in the south of France and became part of the British production renaissance.

The cinema, the cinema theatre, is a world of its own, a suspended universe where alternative realities come to life, one journeys uncumbered by space and time, often towards worlds similar to our own, many other times towards distant and unimaginable galaxies (or only imaginable due to their cinematic presence), towards heavenly or dystopian destinations.

On the occasion of the 37th edition of the Il Cinema Ritrovato festival, from 23 June to 23 July 2023 there will be a 20% discount on all Edizioni Cineteca di Bologna titles (excluding titles published in the last six months).

Il Cinema Ritrovato Kids – a section curated by Schermi e Lavagne, the Cineteca di Bologna’s Educational Department – offers our younger viewers a journey through time and space: an eight-day programme filled with approximately thirty films, creative workshops, shows and concerts.

Now in its 20th anniversary year, the One Hundred Years Ago section continues its annual exploration of a single year in cinema’s rich and varied history with a selection of enduring classics and archival rarities as well as thought-provoking documentaries from 1923.

Last year we presented a series on German musical comedies, 1930-32. Now we follow up on the fate and the continuing creativity of the talents involved during their exile years, by screening five German-language musical comedies produced in Austria and Hungary.

After celebrating 100 years of the 9.5mm format in the last year’s programme, we continue this year with another anniversary. 100 years ago, Eastman Kodak introduced the 16mm format as a less expensive alternative to 35mm film. The areas in which the 16mm format was and is used are very diverse.

Il Cinema Ritrovato paints its (cinema) doors black again, with a selection of the horror genre, from the depths of darkness to its greyer nuances. The choice on offer is rich and varied: from the nightmare tales of Black Sunday and The Tram (a look back at the birth of the Italian horror, with Mario Bava and Dario Argento) to the cults, such as The Wicker Man - The Final Cut and The House with Laughing Windows, even arriving at the aquatic visions of Revenge of the Creature and the dark comedy of Gremlins (act 1 and 2, the works of Joe Dante), to the noir-crime of I, The Jury. 

Get comfortable with Dante’s five hour work, The Movie Orgy, reminiscent of Ghezzi’s collage style, intertwining comic images with adverts and scenes of terror. Dream or nightmare, your choice. 

The horror thread travels through various sections of the festival programme and different locations, from Piazza Maggiore to Cinema Europa (the birthplace of Il Cinema Ritrovato 37 years ago), mainly found in the sections “Pratello Pop” and “Recovered and Restored”. 

Over the course of a career that began at the time of the birth of neorealism and lasted more than 60 years, Suso Cecchi d’Amico worked on the screenplays of more than 120 films (mainly, but not exclusively, Italian) directed by both newcomers and established directors.

This year too, Il Cinema Ritrovato will provide an extraordinary forum for exchange and discussion while also offering the opportunity to attend great film masterclasses; Wim Wenders, Ruben Östlund, Joe Dante, Luca Guadagnino, Barbet Schroeder, the iconic Nan Goldin, the director of the Cannes Film Festival and the Institut Lumière Thierry Frémaux, the director of the Cinémathèque suisse Frédéric Maire, Masolino, Caterina and Silvia d’Amico – here to celebrate the legacy of their mother Suso and with Angela Allen, to remember Franco Zeffirelli on his 100 birthday.

In 1903 Méliès was at the peak of his art, creating wonderful gems such as Le Royaume des fées, a film destined to be the centrepiece of a programme made up of several genres, always with its fair share of short comedies and visual tricks. While British pioneers were contributing to cinema with their innovative spirit, in the US – see Edwin S. Porter’s The Great Train Robbery – violence and plot-driven films were already happening.

From today onwards we are proposing a short feature with selections of not to be missed films and events dedicated to various topics. We start with Fluid Cinema, a quartet of films that cross gender stereotypes, from a documentary on film history and LGBT+ influences, to the comedy Peter, to a figure in German queer cinema, Elfi Mikesch, to Greta Garbo's historical portrayal of Queen Christina.

Born in 1940 in Austria and working in Berlin since the 1960s, Elfi Mikesch is one of the most distinguished cinematographers in German cinema. Originally coming from the world of photography, she has worked in the cinema since the early 1970s. Besides shooting her own films, she worked as director of photography on more than 50 films by other directors, among them Werner Schroeter, Rosa von Praunheim, Monika Treut, Friederike Pezold, Heinz Emigholz, Cynthia Beatt and Teresa Villaverde.

Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002), an icon of feminist art, worked with a variety of mediums, from sculpture to painting to installation and also film. Born a French native, the artist moved and lived in various parts of the world, from a childhood and schooling in New York City, to the Balearic islands, where she was introduced to the architectural style of Gaudí, to Paris, where she met fellow artist Jean Tinguely, who would later become her husband.

One of the festival’s continuing strands, once again Cinemalibero will travel down the unpaved roads of cinema history to light up the powerful and unique work of maverick filmmakers unjustly denied admission to the canon of the greats; rediscovering films which, even when successful in their national cinemas, were barely recognised as masterworks outside the borders of their country of production.

This year, the usual appointment with Il Cinema Ritrovato book presentations will be back from 24th to 30th June, every day (apart from on Thursday, 29th June, when Il Cinema Ritrovato - DVD Awards Ceremony will take place) in Piazzetta Pasolini at 7 PM. We will present recently published books from authors, curators and festival guests.

After multiple viewings of  Albert Samama Chikli’s work in recent editions, we are ready to share some (spectacular) findings that have surfaced from the archives of this remarkable personality, now entrusted to the Cineteca di Bologna by his family.

This year’s selection demonstrates the vastness of the documentary genre, the value of its past and the possibilities of its present, and it brings together works that are seemingly distant in nature. The profession of documentary filmmaker is a dangerous one, a participatory narrative full of pitfalls: we discover this with Schroeder, an intrepid witness of the dictatorship in Uganda; with Roemer and his portrait of mafia violence; with Labudović, sent by Tito to fuel – through cinema – the anti-colonial struggle in Algeria.

The distinguished director Teinosuke Kinugasa (1896-1982) stands in a paradoxical relationship to international cinephilia. While Crossroads (1928) and Gate of Hell (1953) were shown in Europe at an early stage, and while Page of Madness (1926) is recognised as an avant-garde classic, Kinugasa’s wider oeuvre is still barely known abroad.

Sometimes fate acts in unfathomable ways. Random findings in different places may end up shedding light on a specific subject, as though from on high. Between 2022 and 2023, Cineteca di Bologna, La Cinémathèque française and Gosfil’mofond of Russia, each of them individually, made several astonishing rediscoveries and carried out restorations of films featuring Diana Karenne, Ileana Leonidoff, Helena Makowska, who were among the main Russian actresses active in Italian silent cinema.

What does it mean to revisit the works of the great masters in their original splendour? It means renewing the love of cinema, reading the passion of the author between the lines, amplifying the pleasure of being a spectator in the darkness of the theatre. Without any interference. Let’s start with some good news: there haven’t been this many restored films since before the pandemic!

Known for his ability to encode his vision in light, movement, and later in colour, the Tbilisi-born Armenian Rouben Mamoulian had one of the most consistent bodies of work in American cinema. Rightly celebrated for his invaluable contribution to Hollywood’s transition to sound, he both unchained the camera and used dialogue like a work of musical accompaniment. His mobile camera was envied and imitated, and his style is instantly recognisable for its sophistication, humour and erotic undertone.

Perhaps the greatest, certainly the most admired and imitated – not only was Anna Magnani unique, she was also a model of acting style and an Italian icon. After first presenting herself as a brilliant actress – thanks to the triumph of Rome, Open City – she subsequently diversified from the many incarnations of her popular Roman character to play very different roles, such as those in Jean Renoir’s The Golden Coach or the monodrama The Human Voice (an episode in Roberto Rossellini’s L’Amore), to finally arriving in Hollywood and winning an Oscar for The Rose Tattoo.

Twice Palme d'Or winner at Cannes in only five years, currently President of the jury on the Croisette: the Swedish director Ruben Östlund will be a guest at the 37th edition of Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival, organised by the Cineteca di Bologna from June 24th to July 2nd 2023.

Ruben Östlund will be both a guest and a teacher during his stay in Bologna, with the International Filmmaking Academy, in a long stage on the set involving 20 young directors from all over the world, who will shoot short films under the guidance of Östlund himself.

At Cinema Ritrovato, Östlund will hold a Lesson on Cinema open to the public and will present his film The Square in Piazza Maggiore.

What are the names of the three provocative actors in Bertolucci's The Dreamers (2003)? Who was the voice over actress (future diva of Italian cinema) of the actress Dorian Gray in Antonioni's Il grido (1957)? What was the name of the Senegalese director who shot La Noire de... (1966)?

These and many other questions fuelled the Cinephile Quiz evening last Monday at the Lumière, which saw many cinema lovers being rewarded with a festival pass for Il Cinema Ritrovato 2023.

Il Cinema Ritrovato On Tour–Minneapolis will feature recently restored archival films at The Main Cinema from May 11–13, 2023. Presented in partnership by Archives on Screen, Twin Cities, the Film Society of Minneapolis/St. Paul, and Cineteca di Bologna, the festival will screen eleven highlights from Il Cinema Ritrovato’s 2022 lineup. 

Il Cinema Ritrovato on Tour at University of New Hampshire has come to its fifth edition, a five-day festival that will take place from March 27th to 31st at the Memorial Union Building Theater II in Durham.

A truly unique programme that still aims to pay the right tribute to the history of cinema with exclusive restorations and introductions, thanks to the constant collaboration between Cineteca of Bologna and UNH. The complete list of the screenings is available on the official website.

Il Cinema Ritrovato – DVD Awards is promoted by Cineteca di Bologna in the framework of Il Cinema Ritrovato film festival. The competition is open to all films released in DVD/Blu-Ray and will take place during the 37th edition of the festival.

Il Cinema Ritrovato goes on tour in the United States!

From March 9th to 13th, some of the best films from last year's edition return to the School of Languages, Literatures & Cutlures at the University of Maryland. The full programme can be read here.

The Classics Restored Festival is renewed for a fourth edition from March 3rd to March 13th, 2023.

Many films from the last edition of Il Cinema Ritrovato are scheduled, including Sciuscià by Vittorio De Sica, restored by L'Immagine Ritrovata laboratory and already featured in the 2022 Cannes Classics program.

January 16th–30th, 2023, MoMA’s annual festival dedicated to celebrating newly preserved and restored films from archives, studios, distributors, foundations, and independent filmmakers from around the world returns in its 19th edition.

In March 2023, FIAF will join forces with the Cinémathèque française and the Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé once again to offer a short training course (in English and French) aimed at professionals in FIAF archives and beyond. The general theme of this specialized course is still "Programming Film Heritage", and will once again be taught by programming experts from the global network of FIAF archives and other distinguished professionals in a relevant field. This 8th edition of the Winter School will take place on-site only, at the Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé and at the Cinémathèque, on 6 & 7 March 2023, just before the "Toute la mémoire du monde" festival at the Cinémathèque française (8-12 March 2023).

The Morelia International Film Festival (FICM) is a non profit civil association, dedicated to support Mexican filmmakers, cultivate new audiences and to spread the cinematographic culture of Mexico, through an inclusive and hospitable platform for national filmmakers, the public and the international film community.

"Hugo Fregonese: Man on the Run", MoMA The Museum of Modern Art (Floor T2/T1 The Debra and Leon Black Family Film Cente) Through Sep 14

Perhaps history’s most restless filmmaker, Hugo Fregonese directed his first films in his native Argentina in the 1940s and then embarked on a globe-trotting career that took him to Hollywood, London, Paris, Rome, Munich, and eventually back to South America, all the while exploring themes of claustrophobia, entrapment, and imprisonment.

There is a little bit of Cinema Ritrovato at the Budapest Film Classic Marathon 2022 (Budapest, 13-18 september). In the festival programme the new restoration of The Color of Pomegranates by Sergei Parajanov will be screened. The film has been restored by Cineteca di Bologna/L'Immagine Ritrovata laboratory and The Film Foundation's World Cinema Project, in association with the National Cinema Centre of Armenia and Gosfilmofond of Russia. Restoration funded by the Material World Charitable Foundation.

Cinema Rediscovered returns for its sixth edition in and around Bristol UNESCO City of Film from Wednesday 20th – Sunday 24th July 2022, celebrating the return of the big screen experience with a line-up of movie magic, from brand new restorations and rediscoveries to film curiosities before going on a UK wide tour from Aug – Oct 2022 with the support of MUBI and BFI awarding funds from National Lottery.

The programme features Chess of the Wind, restored in 4K by Cineteca di Bologna in collaboration with The Film Foundation's World Cinema Project.

"Hollywood’s studio era remains a continual goldmine for film historians and cinephiles looking for hidden gems, and Il Cinema Ritrovato has made a habit of yearly rediscoveries of long-forgotten directors whose turn it is be elevated to auteur status. Blunt and direct as the tactic may be — bound to raise even Andrew Sarris’ eyebrows when it comes to framing films exclusively through auteurism — there’s no denying that it’s been successful in the past. This year, the title of the great rediscovered auteur goes to Hugo Fregonese, an Argentina-born director who only made films in Hollywood for a few years amidst a 30-year career.

"When they unscrewed the heavy and majestic La Nonna (our carbon arc projector) from the pedestal in Piazzetta Pasolini and the ice cream vendor packed his stuff and went home it was clear that Il Cinema Ritrovato XXXVI was over. We had a ball. More than 400 films were shown during 8 and a half days. Cinema could be found in every corner of the city.

After the last year's round-up – seen and read by many – I asked colleagues, curators, film historians, silent film accompanists, scholars and the attendees to pick the title of the two films from the festival, one as their favourite film and the other of their major discovery at this year's edition. Découverte du 36e festival du film restauré de Bologne, l’œuvre de l’argentin Hugo Fregonese (1908-1987) est celle d’un saddle tramp (pour reprendre le titre de son western de 1950, littéralement, vagabond à cheval) qui n’a cessé de changer de pays pour continuer à faire des films. Méconnus en France (ils ont quand même fait l’objet d’une rétrospective à la Cinémathèque de Chaillot en 2003, sous l’égide de Jacques Lourcelles), ses films témoignent de la pugnacité d’un réalisateur de série B doué qui a réussi à se hisser, au tournant des années 50, jusqu’aux studios hollywoodiens.

Ritrovato returns, in situ, live….and it was great to be back. Bologna itself, the food, the weather…all were heaven. But the reason we go to Bologna at this time of of the year is the films, the quality of the prints, the restorations, the way they are programmed and projected, and the conversations that take place around the screenings. In this episode, offered as vodcast and podcast, we discuss  the new booking system and the different strands of the programme: 100 Years Ago, Peter Lorre, Sophia Loren, Hugo Fregonese, Weimar Musicals , some of the restorations (El, Ludwig, La Maman et la Putain, Shoeshine,  Nosferatu etc) and — in less detail — Yugoslavian Cinema and Cinema Libero.

After two COVID-struck years in which Il Cinema Ritrovato scrabbled on in restrictive and restricted capacities, the festival came back in full fashion this year. Set in Bologna, home to one of the oldest universities in the world, it’s appropriate that this festival should be so focused on film history itself – on reframing, re-shaping and rediscovering the canon of cinema. As a result, the crowd is appropriately cinephiliac, bringing together critics, curators, archivists, scholars and just plain old enthusiasts.

Even if Il Cinema Ritrovato 2022 has officially closed on July, 3rd on the musics of The Blues Brothers, the festival actually continues: from 4th to 10th of July, we will be able to watch some of the festival films in the most beautiful cinema theatre in the world... Piazza Maggiore!

But the festival also celebrates all of you, our audience, who fill the halls and squares with the magic of your looks and your smiles, who come from near or far and who, with a good dose of patience, immerse yourself in this collective warm - as only Bologna can be in summer - and welcoming whirlwind.

Saturday, July 2nd at the Auditorium DAMSLab the award ceremony of Premio Vittorio Boarini, honoring Cineteca founder, took place. The awards, starting from this year, will be assigned every year to international personalities who distinguished themselves in the preservation and enhancement of cinema heritage.

Actually, tonight we won't find the Blues Brothers at Lake Wapazzami, but in Piazza Maggiore at 9.45 PM. For the occasion, John Landis himself, the director of this miracle of visual and sonic energy, will introduce his film to the audience in Piazza Maggiore. It is a unique and irrepressible spectacle, which the giant screen of Piazza Maggiore will allow to explode in all of its catastrophic power. To be prepared we have just two things left to do. The first: remember to bring with us a pair of sunglasses. The second: review the coreographies!

This Year il Cinema Ritrovato dedicates two appointments to CAM Sugar, historical film music label that represents the richer source of music visuals in Italy. A selection of CAM Sugar artworks is at the centre of an exhibition that takes place in Biblioteca Renzo Renzi from June 25th to september 10th (closed in august). Besides, CAM Sugar catalogue will be presented in Piazzetta Pasolini during a dedicated event on Friday July 1st at 7PM.

In the program of the 36th edition of Il Cinema Ritrovato, across the sections, we can identify a common thread dedicated to photography: on the one hand, we propose films involving great names of the photographic art; on the other hand, we point out in this article some titles that have become famous for the care or the uniqueness in the choices of the direction of photography.

Il Cinema Ritrovato is back, and all in person. Cinema may be the child of the era of technical reproduction, but a festival is an irreproducible experience and Il Cinema Ritrovato is back live between the end of June and the beginning of July, in the company of and thanks to the many people who will be present at the screenings. There are only a few days left before the official opening on Saturday 25 June, but from yesterday, Sunday 19 June, we already started to rediscover the pleasure and enjoyment of watching film in the company of others, with the first of a series of screenings that will take place in Piazza Maggiore and at Lumière and Arlecchino cinemas.

This year, the usual appointment with Il Cinema Ritrovato book presentations will be back from 26th to 29th June, every day in Piazzetta Pasolini at 7 PM. We will present recently published books from authors, curators and festival guests. An unmissable daily event realized in collaboration with librerie.coop.

Not only pass holders: starting from today, all the screenings of the section Documents and Documentaries programmed at the Auditorium DAMSLab are open to the public. Even who didn't purchase a festival pass will be able to attend the screenings buying a 5 euros ticket.

The "cinephiles' paradise" is a space-time bubble where one can enjoy the wonders and the thousand faces of cinema, from the aesthetic to the socio-cultural, to the technical. At the same time, a place to discover those (not so) rare cases in which cinema reveals its secrets and places them at the centre of the scene. Among the many facets of Il Cinema Ritrovato, certainly we cannot overlook the musical factor that enriches many of the festival's screenings.

The Orchestra of Teatro Comunale di Bologna returns to Piazza Maggiore with two film concerts featuring original scores composed and conducted by Timothy Brock to mark the centenary of two of the masterpieces of film history: Erich von Stroheim’s Foolish Wives on the 27th June and F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu on the 2nd July. In Piazza Maggiore Dans la nuit (1929) by Charles Vanel will be programmed with a musical accompaniment, too.

The forthcoming edition of Il Cinema Ritrovato (June 25-July 3, 2022) doesn't include an individual strand for Iranian cinema, however, it'll nonetheless feature at least five dazzling Iranian films, made between 1961 and 2022, shown across 3 different strands.

Waiting for the 36th edition of Il Cinema Ritrovato (Bologna, 25th june - 3rd july 2022), we're happy to announce a first list of films that will be scheduled during the festival!

Il Cinema Ritrovato on Tour at University of New Hampshire has come to its fourth edition, a seven-day festival that will take place from March 25th to 31st at The Music Hall in Portsmouth and the MUB Theaters of the UNH in Durham.

Il Cinema Ritrovato on Tour arrives at the University of Maryland: a first edition that will take place on March 18th, 2022 at the Old Greenbelt Theater in Greenbelt.

The ninth edition of Il Cinema Ritrovato on Tour (Rediscovered Cinema on Tour) will take place from March 10 to March 12, 2022 at the Granoff Center for the Arts, Providence. 

The Classics Restored Festival is renewed for a third edition from 4 to 13 March 2022. Cineteca di Bologna will attend with a beautiful recovered version of Accattone by Pier Paolo Pasolini, restored at L'Immagine Ritrovata laboratory.

FIAF, in partnership with the Cinémathèque française and the Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé, will be hosting the 7th Winter School on Programming FilmHeritagein Paris on 28 and 29 March 2022.

Momento clou dell'evento: la campana della Torre dell'Arengo, protagonista della proiezione, si è unita eccezionalmente all'Orchestra per musicare una delle scene più rappresentative del film. Super8 & 16mm – Great Small Gauges. After two years of presenting exclusively short 16mm films, we are about to expand the view on small gauge filmmaking. An important part of this year’s selection is formed by long-form work, where small-gauge film stock has been used extensively. Moreover, Super8, a format which rarely finds its way into a movie theatre, is also included. The section presents pure cinematic miniatures of Helga Fanderl in a programme curated by the Super8 artist herself, lyrical documentary landscapes and cityscapes by Annik Leroy and an anti-ethnographic essay by Trinh T. Minh-ha. As an extra, the session with the wondrous Archeoscope, an ‘all gauges’ machine built and operated by Jan Kulka, will allow you to experience the magic of analogue projection, not of a film strip, but of salt, lace, dust and more. Curated by Karl Wratschko and Mariann Lewinsky.

The award aims to encourage and give visibility to quality home entertainment Dvds and Blu-rays from around the world. The competition is open to Dvds and Blu-rays released between February 2020 and February 2021 of important films made before 1991 (at least thirty years ago) and thus generally in line with the festival’s theme.

In occasione della XXXV edizione del festival Il Cinema Ritrovato (Bologna, 20-27 luglio), torna l’appuntamento con Il Cinema Ritrovato Young, dedicato a giovani cinephiles dai 14 ai 18 anni, proposto dall’ufficio educativo Schermi e Lavagne. Ospiti della terza puntata i critici cinematografici Emiliano Morreale, curatore della rassegna su Aldo Fabrizi al Cinema Ritrovato, e Paolo Mereghetti.

Like every year, Il Cinema Ritrovato is not only films: two different exhibition will be set up during the festival. In Biblioteca Salaborsa and at the Grand Hotel Majestic it's already open an exhibition of some pieces from Maurizio Baroni's collection will be exhibited. Sustained by an inexhaustible passion, Baroni collected over 32,000 posters and lobby cards representing over 27,000 titles from 1945 on. In biblioteca Renzo Renzi from july 19th will be set up an exhibition dedicated to the costumist Gino Carlo Sensani.

Enrico Caruso sings as you’ve never… seen before! Yes, because the most legendary voice in the history of  ‘bel canto’ has always lacked a body: but now, here it is. One hundred years after the death of the great Neapolitan tenor (on 2nd August 1921), the Cineteca di Bologna commemorates Enrico Caruso by presenting the restoration of My Cousin, the only survivor of the two films in which he appeared, at the Cinema Ritrovato festival.

It was made in 1918 and is therefore a silent film, but thanks to an extraordinary effort to restore the film and synchronise it with his actual voice, we can finally see (and hear!) Enrico Caruso sing the celebrated aria Vesti la giubba (better known as Ridi, pagliaccio, or On with the Motley), from Ruggero Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci.

If so many interesting and beautiful films were produced in the past, we can only be optimistic about the future.

Nella splendida cornice della Biblioteca Renzo Renzi, è possibile immergersi nel cinema a 360 gradi, passeggiando tra le novità editoriali in ambito cinematografico raccolte all'interno della Mostra Mercato dell'Editoria Cinematografica, giunta alla diciannovesima edizione. Inaugurata nel 1810, sorge come “luogo dato agli spettacoli diurni” in un’area occupata dall’antico Convento di Santa Maria Maddalena. In origine era un teatro a cielo aperto; nel 1950 venne trasformata in cinema. Dal 2014 è una delle sedi di Emilia Romagna Teatro Fondazione - Teatro Nazionale. E oggi torna a trasformarsi in sala cinematografica in occasione del Cinema Ritrovato (con uno schermo di 72mq, 12 x 6m)!

In this 35th edition of Il Cinema Ritrovato the festival section dedicated to documentaries is, as usual, rich and diversified. It will include portraits of great filmmakers, compilation films and restorations and, after more than a year spent inside our houses, a selection of travel films.

As usual, Schermi e Lavagne, the education department of the Cineteca di Bologna, offers a section for our youngest cinephiles. This year we are happy to offer children the experience of a return to the cinema auditorium: for seven days, younger audiences can discover films from all eras and travel through time and space in the company of cinema from around the world. Alongside the Cinema Lumière screenings there will be workshops, meetings with industry professionals, and live shows.

Not only streaming: Il Cinema Ritrovato is ready to begin in Bologna from 20 to 27 July. The first screenings at Cinema Lumière, in Piazza Maggiore and LunettArena already started and from tuesday all the other venues of the festival will be open (and this year – to meet Covid social distancing and safety requirements – there are ten of them!). 

Looking back at the films of 100 years ago, we are invited to pose questions about our future. Has the pandemic, which we hope to be emerging from, changed us? Will the cinema be able to capture and convey this sense of change? 

Against All Flags, the retrospective dedicated to Wolfgang Staudte, allows us to get to know the unique journey of a director whose formative years were during the Nazi period, who chose to work in East Germany, and who later moved to West Germany – all the while directing challenging and personal films. Staudte is a clear representative of the anti-nationalist side of the cinema, which, from its very beginnings – thanks to its immediate global distribution and the images shot in various continents by the Lumière cameramen – has always been a collective art that transcends borders.

There have always been many strong links between cinema and literature. The seventh art fully embraced the works of great novelists, adapting them into some of the most celebrated films in the history of cinema. The practice of transforming literary works for the cinema has deep roots and was already widespread in the silent era. At Il Cinema Ritrovato this year you will be able to see several of these period adaptations on the big screen.

For many years, the programme has been excavating a history of cinema from a female perspective. In 2021, this tendency emerges in all of the different sections, with new discoveries and celebrations of female actors, directors, scriptwriters and critics.

With summer approaching, it's time for the Big Screen of Piazza Maggiore to come back! It will dominate over the centre of Bologna till the middle of August, with all the evening screenings of Sotto le stelle del cinema / Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival.

While Netflix launches the second part of the tv series Lupin, with Omar Sy, and Toei animation announces the new animated series of Lupin the third, the character created by Monkey Punch as an Arsène Lupin direct descendant, the gentleman thief comes to visit Il Cinema Ritrovato, too.

In the section dedicated to the Tomijiro Komiya Collection, we will be able to enjoy seven minutes of daring actions with one of the first film appearances of the gentleman cambrioleur, portraited by the Pathé star Max Linder.

The tour around the globe of Il Cinema Ritrovato lands in Finland, France and Serbia this month, check out the wonderful programmes dedicated to film heritage proposed by our partner festivals.

He was the teacher and mentor of Buster Keaton. At the beginning of the Twenties, he was the higliest paid actor in Hollywood (5.000 dollar a week!), as famous as Charlie Chaplin himself. Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle, with his massive phisicality and his unsuspected agility, played a fundamental role in the history of comedy films, until in 1921 he was stroke by a huge scandal, accused to be implicated in the death of a young actress. The subsequent trials demonstrated his innocence, but his career was doomed.

In the section dedicated to the year 1921, Il Cinema Ritrovato 2021 presents the last film of this great performer, Crazy to Marry by James Cruze.

Un nuovo schermo per l’estate bolognese: Sotto le stelle del cinema, la storica manifestazione della Cineteca di Bologna che accenderà lo schermo di Piazza Maggiore nella seconda metà di giugno, si arricchirà anche quest’anno, dopo l’esperienza del 2020 al Centro Sportivo Barca, di una nuova arena, che sarà allestita all’interno del parco della Lunetta Gamberini.

Il Cinema Ritrovato On Tour resumes its journey around the world with two programs promoted by Brown University and University of New Hampshire on the American streaming platform Eventive, in collaboration with Cineteca di Bologna: 

For the sixth FIAF Winter School, FIAF joins forces with the Cinémathèque française and the Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé to offer a short training course aimed primarily at professionals in FIAF archives and beyond. The general theme of this specialized course is still “Programming Film Heritage”, and will once again be taught by experienced professionals from our sector, most of them programmers in film archives affiliated to FIAF. Because of the context, this sixth edition will take place as a online event over four half days, on Thursday 25 and Friday 26 February, Monday 1 and Tuesday 2 March 2020.

"Bologna in 2020 was destined to be different, with COVID-19 still lapping around. Frankly, when I saw the postponement announcement, that was the last I expected to hear of the festival this year, receding into a passed world, like so many other events. Cinema Ritrovato is my favourite festival – a week saturated with films from all of cinema’s history. In an amenable and historic city, I would find a path through the week, knowing I could not see half the offering.

Grande protagonista della giornata di domani, 27 agosto, sarà il Premio Oscar Volker Schlöndorff: il regista del Tamburo di latta è infatti al centro del nuovo documentario di Pierre-Henri Gibert, Volker Schlöndorff. "Italy’s Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival – which has long seen thousands of heritage film lovers and distributors flock to the city of Bologna in summer – officially kicked off Tuesday with a freshly restored version of Michelangelo Antonioni’s Cronaca di un amore. It’s an emblematic opener in various ways. The now freshly restored pic stars late great Italian actor Lucia Bosé who died last March, having contracted coronavirus. Antonioni’s 1950 drama is also among titles in the Venice Film Festival’s Venice Classics section, which has migrated to Bologna this year due to the impact of Covid-19 constraints on Lido screening space.

La 34a edizione del festival Il Cinema Ritrovato celebra Federico Fellini, nel centenario della nascita: l’anteprima internazionale del nuovo film di Anselma Dell’Olio, Fellini degli spiriti (domenica 23 in Piazza Maggiore e al BarcArena; domenica alle 19.00 in Piazzetta Pasolini, incontro con la regista e i produttori Maria Carolina Terzi e Luciano Stella, ingresso libero fino esaurimento posti); l’anteprima internazionale del nuovo restauro di Luci del varietà, prima co-regia di Fellini, a quattro mani con Alberto Lattuada nel 1950 (mercoledì 26, ore 16.30, Teatro Comunale); il nuovo monumentale volume di Aldo Tassone, Fellini 231⁄2. Tutti i film, dedicato all’intera filmografia del regista; un’intervista ritrovata, realizzata da Gideon Bachmann nel 1985 (martedì 25, ore 16.00, Cinema Lumière).

80 anni per uno dei film più grandi di sempre: era il 1940 quando Charlie Chaplin scolpiva nella storia del cinema Il grande dittatore. E sabato 22 agosto la Cineteca di Bologna – che da 20 anni si dedica al restauro dell’opera di Chaplin – celebra Il grande dittatore con la proiezione del restauro in Piazza Maggiore (e in contemporanea alla BarcArena). “This is a xenon lamp projector. The difference between the light of the xenon projector and the arc lamp projector, is the type of light emitted: xenon lamps are slightly colder. Xenon lamps are much less costly compared to carbon rods. This is why they were used in cinema, it was a matter of cost. Movies shot in the era - if the light of the era was the carbon arc, the voltaic arc, philologically they should be projected with a carbon arc projector, because the whole development and film printing process was correct for carbon arc projection”.

Vincere una scommessa nell’anno più difficile. È quanto possiamo dire di Sotto le stelle del cinema a un primo bilancio di Ferragosto: la storica manifestazione promossa dalla Cineteca di Bologna nell’ambito di Bologna Estate che da ventisei anni porta più di cinquanta sogni di cinema sul grande schermo di Piazza Maggiore era quest’anno più incerta che mai. Slittata di qualche settimana rispetto al suo consueto avvio alla metà di giugno, Sotto le stelle del cinema sta attraversando ancora una volta l’estate dei bolognesi e ci sta traghettando verso una 34ma edizione del festival Il Cinema Ritrovato che ne raccoglierà eccezionalmente il testimone il 25 agosto.

Il Cinema Ritrovato is ready for its 34th edition. Miraculously, the programme has been printed, and two weeks before the start of the festival I can leaf through the catalogue: one of the great achievements of Il Cinema Ritrovato. Putting together a festival is always a race against time, and catalogues are seen as one of the last things to worry about. In the internet age, they are a bit of a throwback; however, here at Il Cinema Ritrovato we’re fond of relics from the past, and so our catalogue is beautiful. In fact, I would go so far as to say that no other festival in the world has a catalogue as rich as ours. Because Il Cinema Ritrovato is different from other festivals, it doesn’t distinguish between past and present, it focuses on cinema, on roads forgotten and those so well-trodden that nobody remembers why. It is driven not by trends and markets, but rather by a fidelity to cinema, to beauty, to research and to the pleasure of viewing.

The festival returns against all odds, rescheduled for a time of the year which is perhaps not as familiar to the festival audience as the original June date, yet no less sunny and inviting. Coming out of an experience as devastating as the Covid-19 pandemic, the desire to reconnect with life, the world and the arts is abundant. Prima della proiezione del restaurato Essere donne abbiamo avuto l’opportunità di intervistare, la prima documentarista donna italiana, Cecilia Mangini. Ad un giorno dalla fine della XXXIII edizione del festival del Cinema Ritrovato, Grover Crisp presenta il restauro, realizzato da Sony Pictures Entertainment, di Husbands (Mariti, 1970) di John Cassavetes. All’interno della sezione Ritrovati e Restaurati, il film torna in sala con grande vitalità. Un film duro, definito dallo stesso regista come una commedia anche se, lui stesso ammette, le parole che lo descrivono meglio sono angoscia ed esasperazione.

“La bellezza, l’originalità e lo stupore sono sempre qualcosa di penetrante. Sono sicuro – anzi, lo so! – che Francis Ford Coppola, un uomo così lontano, così diverso, sicuramente mi ha influenzato”: a rifletterci con maggiore freddezza, le parole di Marco Bellocchio non suonano affatto scontate nella sala gremita del teatro Manzoni di Bologna. La presenza di Francis Ford Coppola, ospite d’onore della trentatreesima edizione del Cinema Ritrovato, conduce inevitabilmente a un brusco cambio d’atmosfera all’interno della città tutta e se il festival conserva i tratti di un evento che ha sempre (consapevolmente) accantonato la dimensione glamour in favore dell’incontro, per Francis Ford Coppola non sembra voler fare eccezione.

Il 20 gennaio 2020 ricorrerà il centenario della nascita di Federico Fellini e Il Cinema Ritrovato, anticipando i tempi, all’interno della sua XXXIII edizione ha voluto dedicargli un intero percorso di film e incontri, intitolato “100 di questi Fellini”. Il percorso si incrocia con il “Progetto Gideon Bachmann”, inaugurato quest’anno grazie alla collaborazione con Cinemazero, il quale avrà il compito di portare alla luce le interviste, le foto e i documentari del giornalista di cinema. Grazie a Bachmann, infatti, si ha moltissimo materiale relativo a Fellini e al suo modo di operare sul set.

“Agnès era un fuoco ed era la più giovane di tutti (…) l’ultima volta che è stata nostra ospite, al termine del festival ci ha portato tutti fuori a bere” così Gian Luca Farinelli ricorda, senza nascondere qualche nota malinconica, Agnès Varda in occasione di una delle prime proiezioni italiane del suo ultimo film: Varda par Agnès (2019). June 22nd, 2019. In a blazing hot Bologna, the 33rd edition of Cinema Ritrovato opens with thousands of cinephiles ready to jump into the theaters around the city center. They walk quickly looking for shelter from the heat under the arcades while wearing black tote bags on their sides. On those bags – which tirelessly grinds tons of kilometers every day – there is she, Musidora. White skin, large black – coated eyes, mile – long lashes, red lips, with a jet black bob. The enigma of a face from the past that only needs a snap to return to delight the general public.

Dr. No seduces the grand screen today like in 1962: Sean Connery in the role of James Bond became an icon, dominating the other 23 productions and raising as the favorite among the interpreters of the world’s most famous secret British agent..

Bernardo Bertolucci is no more. He left a sense of emptiness all over the world as shown by the videos of friends who could not be at Teatro Argentina in Rome - an evening set up to celebrate his memory – like Il Cinema Ritrovato proposed with on Wednesday with the meeting “Parlando di Bernando.”

On June 27th, DAMSLab, “home” of the ‘Document and Documentaries Section’ curated by Gian Luca Farinelli, hosted the screening of Conversation avec Romy Schneider (2017) by Patrick Jeudy who was present in the room to co-introduce the film with the Festival director.

Vittorio Storaro talks about Coppola’s cinema and the origins of the surreal photography of Apocalypse Now.

Starting from the 70s, Dutch photographer Charles 'Chas' Gerretsn has worked as a war photographer in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Chile, giving the world some unforgettable shots. The most famous is the portrait of the dictator Pinochet. After moving to Hollywood in 1975 he started shooting for different studios until 1989, when Francis Ford Coppola asked him to report everything that happens on the set of his new movie in 1976. Baris Azman's documentary Dutch Angle: Chas Gerretsen & Apocalypse Now was released after KINO Rotterdam and the Nederlands Fotomuseum collaborated together. Now, the largely undiscovered work finally comes to light. 

Marco Giusti reconstructs the life of Ferdinand Guillaume, the first great Italian silent film comedian, through an extraordinary family novel with unpublished materials that shed light on a still unknown chapter in international cinema and entertainment.

Il 25 giugno sono partiti i cineconcerti in piazza Maggiore con The Cameraman (1928) di Buster Keaton e Edward Sedgwick: l’Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna da il suo massimo e il pubblico, estasiato e coinvolto, accompagna la conclusione del film con una fragorosa standing ovation.

The award aims to encourage and give visibility to quality home entertainment Dvd and Blu-Ray from around the world. The competition is open to Dvd and Blu-ray released between February 2018 and February 2019 of important films made before 1989 (at least thirty years ago) and thus generally in line with the festival’s theme. The awards are divided into five categories: Best Dvd/Blu-ray (The Peter Von Bagh Award), Best Single Release, Best Special Features (bonus), Best Rediscovery of a Forgotten Film, Best Series/Best Box.

Il Cinema Ritrovato non smette di stupire: il 24 giugno, per la sezione “Ridateci Musidora!”, i Los Musidoros hanno provato a ricreare la forma di arte spettacolare pensata da Musidora e  hanno incantato il pubblico di sala Mastroianni offrendo, nel mezzo della proiezione di La tierra de los toros (1924), uno spettacolo che fonde cinema e teatro.

Esattamente cinquant’anni fa l’uomo posava il piede sulla Luna. In occasione di questa ricorrenza è nato Destinazione Luna: un progetto per bambini e ragazzi che, attraverso rassegne cinematografiche, incontri con autori, laboratori e lezioni tematiche hanno guardato alle missioni spaziali e ai viaggi sulla Luna come risultato di una serie di sovrapposizioni tra mondo scientifico e cinematografico. Thierry Frémaux, lo storico direttore del festival di Cannes, è ospite del festival Il Cinema Ritrovato. Tra gli appuntamenti che lo vedono protagonista la Lezione di cinema: "La risposta del cinema". Frémaux ha affrontato temi centrali della controversia Cannes vs Netflix, ribadendo ancora una volta il suo attaccamento alla sala, come luogo del cinema. Con atteggiamento decisamente ottimista, il direttore di Cannes si è detto speranzoso per le sorti del cinema.

John Bailey, presidente dell'Academy of the motion pictures arts and science, è di quelle figure che hanno vissuto di cinema e al cinema hanno dato tutto. Con oltre 40 anni di esperienza nel cinema, lavorando sia come assistente cameraman che direttore della fotografia, Bailey è tra le figure di maggior spicco nell'ambito del restauro cinematografico. Il suo amore per il cinema lo ha portato a Bologna, ospite del festival Il Cinema Ritrovato, dove ha messo a disposizione del pubblico le versioni restaurate di molti film, tra cui Il peccato di Lady Considine e La maschera della morte rossa.

Nella giornata di lunedì 24 giugno la lezione di cinema sul grande regista egiziano Youssef Chahine ha animato gli spazi del DAMSLab in Piazzetta Pier Paolo Pasolini. Alle ore 17 il pubblico ha preso posto in sala per poter approfondire grazie a un team di esperti la produzione del cineasta arabo, autore di titoli memorabili come Bab al-hadid (Central Station, 1958) e Iskanderija...Lih? (Alexandria...Why?, 1978), entrambi in programma al Cinema Ritrovato.

Prima dell’avvento dell’audiovisivo e del digitale, prima del ripetersi quasi ossessivo dell’informazione, era il manifesto cinematografico ad attirare l’attenzione del pubblico. Sono moltissimi i cartelloni realizzati da pittori italiani che sono stati utilizzati a livello internazionale contribuendo così alla nascita di una scuola artistica italiana. Tra questi Silvano “Nano” Campeggi è il più riconosciuto nel cinema hollywoodiano e a lui e alle sue opere, tra manifesti e bozzetti, è dedicata la mostra Silvano Nano Campeggi. The young and politically committed Afghan filmmaker Mariam Ghani, director of the documentary "What we left unfinished", visited "L' Immagine Ritrovata" laboratory, finding it extremely helpful for her archive research.

Once again, the Renzo Renzi Library will host the 17th edition of the Cinema Ritrovato Book Fair from June 21st and June 30th, 2019. Born during Il Cinema Ritrovato in 2003, it has developed over the years to what it is today: a unique place in which to find cinematographic publications from all over the world. Since 2014, in fact, the Cineteca decided to give more space and visibility to the event and directly contacted publishers and distributors in order to have thorough and in-depth research.  

The guided tours of the Cineteca collections and L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory lead to the discovery of a unique heritage of its kind, a national and international reference point for professionals, scholars and cinema enthusiasts.

Second screenings of the “Under the skies of Seul” section dedicated to the Golden Era of South Korean cinema. Il Cinema Ritrovato hosts Kim Soo-yong who preceded the film with a presentation on his work in relation to time and space.   

Eddie Muller, found and president of the Film Noir Foundation, introduces the world preview of the restoration of The Devil Thumbs a Ride (1947) and The Threat (Braccati dai G-Men, 1949) by Felix E. Feist, extraordinary and baffling examples of series B cinematography in their most violent and bad form.  

Wednesday, june 26, 4.45 p.m, Cinema Arlecchino. "Ghazieh-e-shelk-e avval, ghazieh-e shelk-e dovvom" (Iran / 1979) will be presented for the first time ever at Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival.

“Anti-bourgeois, anti-fascist, stateless. Luis Buñel was one of the great film personalities and one of the most unconventional artists of the 20th century.” This is how the festival’s co-director Cecilia Cenciarelli co-introduced Luis Buñel’s Los Olvidados (1950) in Piazza Maggiore alongside her co-director Ehsan Khoshbakht.

Easy Rider, De Filippo, Chahine: al Cinema Ritrovato di Bologna tornano grandi capolavori che hanno fatto politica dando spettacolo

Il capolavoro di Dennis Hopper, restaurato da Sony Columbia per il festival organizzato dalla Cineteca di Bologna, visto sullo schermo gigantesco di Piazza Maggiore è un evento visivo senza eguali. On Monday, June 24th, Il Cinema Ritrovato presents one of the most beautiful technicolor in the history of cinema at the Cinema Arlecchino: Under Capricorn by Alfred Hitchcock. In the presence of John Bailey, President of the Academy Film Archive, who offers viewers a detailed picture of the film.  

On Saturday, June 22nd, in the Renzo Renzi Library at Piazzetta Pasolini, the presentation of the book Epifania del vedere negatoby Sara Iommi and edited by Diabasis was held in the presence of Sara’s mother, Roy Menarini and three of the volume’s curators: Chiara Checcaglini, Elisa Mandelli and Lucia Tralli.

Il cinema ritrovato. La nuova edizione del festival presenta nel vasto cartellone, la rassegna «Jean Gabin il volto della Francia», i film di Eduardo, il Fespaco, la Germania prima della Rft.

On the evening of Sunday, June 23rd, the first voltaic arc lamp projection started the series in Piazzetta Pier Paolo Pasolini. Introduced by Festival Director Mariann Lewinsky and the musician Stephen Horne played live.

My Name Is Elia Kazan (2018) was presented on Sunday. It is a one-hour docu-interview conducted by the journalistAnette Michelson, under the guidance of André Labarthe. It is the only episode of a rich series about the greatest film figures in the Cinema Ritrovato Festival program. Il Cinema Ritrovato Kids and Young opened on Saturday, June 22nd, at 6:30 PM at the Cineteca with the animated reading of Nuno salva la Luna a comic of the same name by Marino Neri edited by Canicola.

The retrospective about the great Egyptian director Youssef Chahine by the Cinema Ritrovato began at the Jolly Theater with the projection Bab al-hadid (1958). Film journalist Tewfik Hakem presented the film.

On Saturday afternoon, before the projection of Miracolo a Milano in Piazza Maggiore, we interviewed Emi De Sica. It is something not to be missed!

First day of projections in Sala Mastroianni. A series of mute from different countries and of various lengths, accompanied by live music. Introduced by Mariann Lewinsky, Andrea Meneghelli and other experts. The only feature film projected, The Red Lantern, closed the day.

On the first day of the 33rd edition of Il Cinema Ritrovato, the documentary O PÃO (Portugal, 1959 - 1963) opened the selection in the large Arlecchino theater that will host films in the Found and Restored section of the festival.

The second day of Cinema Ritrovato was held at the DAMSlab Auditorium in Piazzetta Pasolini. Nicolas Winding Refn and Peter Conheim gave a film lecture and it was moderated by Ehsan Khoshbakht. The Danish director, a guest of the 33rd edition of the Festival, presented his most recent film project ‘byNWR’ to the public.

Not only is De quelques événements sans signification a political, avant-garde or experimental film, it is also a historical document that recounts a difficult period of rebellions, arrests and censorships in Morocco.

The magical arc lamp projections began on Sunday, June 23rd at 9:15 PM, in Piazzetta Pasolini.

In occasion of the 33rd edition of Cinema Ritrovato, Vincenzo Mollica received Il Cinema Ritrovato Prize: a tribute to his significant career in cultural journalism history. Then Mollica held a lecture about Federico Fellini, where he told anecdotes about his life outlining exemplary traits of both his crazy and brilliant personality.

23 giugno 1919-2019. A 100 anni esatti torna al Cinema Modernissimo di Bologna la serie I topi grigi di e con Emilio Ghione (riproposta dal 22 giugno al Cantiere Modernissimo nella sezione Mutiflix del programma del Cinema Ritrovato).

Following the capitulation on 8th May 1945, Germany became an occupied territory devoid of proper nationhood, and it needed a future. It soon became clear that there would be two possible tomorrows: the Soviet-occupied zone was developed in one political direction, the US-American, British and French ones in another. From 1945 to 1948 the latter slowly fused into an administrative unity called the Trizone, which became the basis for the Federal Republic of Germany.

Youssef Chahine was a true man of the movies in the sense that he had done almost every job in the business: he was a director, of course, and a producer too, but also an actor, a singer, and an editor.

A can’t-miss event for all cinema fans, with hundreds books, DVDs and Blu-Rays Within the Festival Il Cinema Ritrovato.

The films shot in 1899 are a marvel. If you are into film history, these are the monuments of 19th century cinematography. If you seek glimpses of times long past, to be able to see in living pictures moments from 120 years ago amounts to a mystical experience.

“Freed from tradition, our eyes have been rejuvenated in the youthful and restrained world of Buster,” wrote Luis Buñuel about Keaton in 1927, admiring the comedy genius as “a great specialist against sentimental infection of all kinds.”

Films on cinema and recent and classic documentaries will light up the big screen.

For more than half a century, Jean Gabin’s clear-eyed charm mesmerised audiences. He was the epitome of the French movie star. Indeed, the tragic rebel he personified during the first part of his career made him a precursor to James Dean, the embodiment of a new, more sensitive type of man.

An ongoing strand of the festival, Cinemalibero has been screening films and showcasing new restorations that are not otherwise easily detected on the radar of cinephilia. This year it will celebrate the 50th anniversary of FESPACO, the Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso, dubbed the ‘capital of African cinema’.

If there are key revolutionary years of the 20th century, 1919 was surely one of them. The tumultuous events of that year will be explored in this programme in many different ways, such as a newsreel covering the funeral of Rosa Luxemburg.

During its twenty years of existence, the Fox Film Corporation became home to the most dazzling line-up of directorial talent in the studio era. As silent film transitioned into sound, the Fox directors included Frank Borzage, Allan Dwan, John Ford, Howard Hawks, William K. Howard, Henry King, William Cameron Menzies, F.W. Murnau, Alfred Santell, Raoul Walsh and many other significant filmmakers.

Il Cinema Ritrovato’s first survey of South Korean film is a rare opportunity to discover key works from the renaissance of one of the most influential East Asian cinemas.

Even though he was born into the movie business, Felix E. Feist was always an outlier. Il Cinema Ritrovato will screen four dark, fresh and deeply felt noir masterpieces by Feist.

Il Cinema Ritrovato has a soft spot for those American masters whose careers encompassed all of the major technical developments from the silent era to Cinemascope. Henry King, the subject of this year’s retrospective, is a prime example.

Georges Franju, who co-founded the Cinémathèque française, devoted a great deal of energy to ensuring the recognition of scientific filmmaking. It is in this apparently marginal category of the seventh art that he found the key to the mechanisms of fear in the cinema.

This year we have introduced a new section devoted to a very important 20th-century medium: small-gauge filmmaking and the beloved 16mm format. Film history would look completely different without the possibility of filmmakers using these cheaper formats.

Remember when you first heard the melodious name Musidora? It was a name out of time and reality. No family name attached. Was she a goddess? A poetess? A golden nymph?

Cinema, which never fully leaves Bologna throughout the year, is about to reclaim the streets of the city as it plays host to one of the greatest motion picture parties in the world, offering some 500 films (no typo, the figure is correct!), talks, presentations and countless other events celebrating cinema in all forms, shapes and sizes. With a brilliant array of great films, masterpieces and rarities lined up, the past has never been so close to us and the projections so entwined with our daily life.
