Waiting for Il Cinema Ritrovato: Award-winning ‘Triangle of Sadness’ director, Ruben Östlund in Bologna

Twice Palme d’Or winner at Cannes in only five years, currently President of the jury on the Croisette: the Swedish director Ruben Östlund will be a guest at the 37th edition of Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival, organised by the Cineteca di Bologna from June 24th to July 2nd 2023.

Ruben Östlund will be both a guest and a teacher during his stay in Bologna, with the International Filmmaking Academy, in a long stage on the set involving 20 young directors from all over the world, who will shoot short films under the guidance of Östlund himself.

At Cinema Ritrovato, Östlund will hold a Lesson on Cinema open to the public and will present his film The Square in Piazza Maggiore.

In addition to Cinema Ritrovato, the public will have the opportunity to meet with Östlund on 6th July, an evening organised by Fondazione MAST at the MAST.Auditorium, which in the past saw other great cinematic names Jane Campion and John Landis for the IFA Masterclass. To follow, Östlund will introduce Force Majeure (2014), winner of the Jury Prize at Cannes and a Golden Globe nomination in 2015 for Best Foreign Language Film.

Ruben Östlund’s latest film, Triangle of Sadness, a fierce satire on the crisis of Western society, won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022, having also won in 2017 for The Square. After launching his career in ski documentaries, with an ironic, unsettling style and comparisons to Haneke and Ingmar Bergman, Ruben Östlund has proved himself a master at dissecting the superficiality of social conventions, letting the individual’s impulses and anxieties rise to the surface.

For the tenth consecutive year, the partnership between Il Cinema Ritrovato and IFA Master Teacher, the masterclass organised by the International Filmmaking Academy in Bologna, is once again renewed. Over the past few years, the International Filmmaking Academy has welcomed and trained more than 150 students from film schools all over the world, who during the period of Cinema Ritrovato have had the opportunity to work under the guidance of Master Teachers such as Bernardo Bertolucci, Abbas Kiarostami, Béla Tarr, Cristian Mungiu, Claudia Llosa, Jane Campion and John Landis, who generously gave the students an insight towards their cinematic approach.
