With another edition of Il Cinema Ritrovato done and dusted, we look at the musicians who made numerous screenings and events more than special. Each artist brought their talent and creativity to the stage, enriching the screenings with their extraordinary musical performances.

They accompanied the silent films of the 1903 and 1923 sections, and not only in the cinemas, musicians took to the stage in Piazza Maggiore and Auditorium Manzoni in front of thousands of spectators with the screenings of Stella Dallas by Henry King and Lady Windermere's Fan by Ernst Lubitsch.

Once again music takes centre stage (and centre screen) of Il Cinema Ritrovato festival. A programme full of musical events, spotted around the festival venues. 

Among the many facets of Il Cinema Ritrovato, certainly we cannot overlook the musical factor that enriches many of the festival's screenings.

The Orchestra of Teatro Comunale di Bologna returns to Piazza Maggiore with two film concerts featuring original scores composed and conducted by Timothy Brock to mark the centenary of two of the masterpieces of film history: Erich von Stroheim’s Foolish Wives on the 27th June and F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu on the 2nd July. In Piazza Maggiore Dans la nuit (1929) by Charles Vanel will be programmed with a musical accompaniment, too.

Among the most anticipated events of Il Cinema Ritrovato 2022 is certainly the cinema concert of Nosferatu, an expressionist masterpiece directed by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau that will be screened in Piazza Maggiore in the year of its centenary (first shown in Berlin on March 4, 1922). The film owes its fame not only to Murnau's dreamlike direction but also to the extraordinary interpretation of Max Schreck, who was so credible in his role as Count Orlok that many rumours soon began to spread about him. The most captivating? Max Schreck could not have been a simple actor, instead, he must have been a real vampire hired by Murnau himself during his trip to the Carpathian mountains.

There have always been many strong links between cinema and literature. The seventh art fully embraced the works of great novelists, adapting them into some of the most celebrated films in the history of cinema. The practice of transforming literary works for the cinema has deep roots and was already widespread in the silent era. At Il Cinema Ritrovato this year you will be able to see several of these period adaptations on the big screen.

Silent masterpieces with live music in the Piazza. Two great evenings intended to renew the collaboration between Cineteca di Bologna and the Teatro Comunale Orchestra: first, on August 26, with the screening of Buster Keaton’s most beloved film, in a newly restored version, The General (1926), accompanied by a score composed and conducted by Timothy Brock.

Il 25 giugno sono partiti i cineconcerti in piazza Maggiore con The Cameraman (1928) di Buster Keaton e Edward Sedgwick: l’Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna da il suo massimo e il pubblico, estasiato e coinvolto, accompagna la conclusione del film con una fragorosa standing ovation.

Domenica 10 giugno è andata in scena al Teatro Centofiori del Quartiere Corticella la serata di muti "in musica" nell'ambito di Concerti per film silenziosi in luoghi inattesi.

Festival Opening: Bertrand Tavernier presents Voyage à travers le cinéma français Sala Auditorium – Laboratori delle Arti UniBo, at 4pmBertrand Tavernier is the guest of honour at this edition, which opens on the Lumière brothers and therefore the essence of cinema, its beginnings, its many reasons for being. This year Tavernier, director of some of the most beautiful French films of the last forty years, presents in Bologna (after the Cannes premiere) his own personal voyage through the cinema of his country, as a sort of best wishes for the opening of the festival (accompanying him will be producers Jérôme and Nicolas Seydoux). It represents a personal recherche du cinéma perdu that interweaves autobiographical evocations with fabulous discoveries concerning a variety of film-makers who were loved, interviewed, known and supported by Tavernier. “It is like a dear friend telling us about the loves of his life, recounting his innermost secrets. Tavernier does this in a lucid, cultured, simple and moving way. We discover another Gabin, another Renoir, and many of the films that are in the Cinema Ritrovato Programme” (Gian Luca Farinelli).
