One of Il Cinema Ritrovato's guardian angels has left us. David Bordwell, film historian, teacher, and writer, passed away on February 29, leaving us with a legacy suffused with illumination, intellectual sobriety, precision, and a scientific approach to film that never lacked passion and conviction.

His books are the standard texts on film history, film style, and film criticism all over the world. They have been translated into numerous languages, from Persian to Chinese, from Greek to Hungarian and Italian, leaving their mark in every classroom that cinema was ever taught, in the quiet moment of any cinephile who delved deeper into the brilliance of this art form.

Immense scale and teeming activity are nothing new to Il Cinema Ritrovato, the Cineteca di Bologna’s annual jamboree of restored and rediscovered films from all over the world. The scorching heat–90 degrees and more for the first few days–only makes it seem more intense than usual. Kristin and I had to miss the last Ritrovato session, but we’re convinced that this nine days’ wonder is still the film-history equivalent of Cannes.

"The absence of ‪‎Peter von Bagh‬, who died last September, was keenly felt at this year’s session of Cinema Ritrovato. It wasn’t just that Peter was no longer there, striding from session to session wearing a big smile and checking the schedule he carried on a small card in his shirt pocket. The loss was made palpable by the reminders of what he had done for world film culture".
