Annunciati i vincitori della XVIII edizione dei Dvd Awards del Cinema Ritrovato, che dà visibilità e incentiva i Dvd e i Blu-ray di qualità realizzati in tutto il mondo nel settore dell’home entertainment. Al concorso partecipano Dvd e Blu-ray pubblicati tra febbraio 2020 e febbraio 2021, relativi a film di acclamata importanza e di produzione anteriore al 1991 (trent’anni fa), rispettando così la vocazione più generale del festival. 

La giuria, composta da Lorenzo Codelli, Philippe Garnier, Pamela Hutchinson, Miguel Marías, Shivendra Singh Dungarpur e presieduta da Paolo Mereghetti, ha assegnato i seguenti premi.

Una scelta piuttosto ovvia, ma cosa c’è che può non piacere in questo cofanetto incantevole? Tutti i film essenziali di Fellini, presentati nella maniera migliore, e un design divertente che non potrebbe essere più appropriato. A questo vanno aggiunte oltre 20 ore di documentari sul maestro, interviste ai collaboratori e vari e disordinati materiali coevi, che inquadrano il periodo di uscita dei film. Il libretto comprende saggi a cura di diversi esperti felliniani ed è impreziosito da meravigliose illustrazioni raccolte dall’archivio Felliniana di Don Young. (Philippe Garnier)

Coppia nella vita e sullo schermo, Morris Engel e Ruth Orkin hanno saputo cogliere con i loro film quella verità che spesso sfuggiva a Hollywood e che guardando al neorealismo italiano avrebbe poi influenzato la Nouvelle Vague francese. Questo cofanetto non solo raccoglie per la prima volta i loro film in blu-ray ma presenta anche una ampia scelta di corti inediti e alcuni preziosi home movie. (Paolo Mereghetti)

Best Rediscovery of a Forgotten Film

DALEKÁ CESTA (Czech, 1948) by Alfréd Radok – Národní filmový archiv (blu-ray)

Scrive André Bazin: «Questo film richiama il mondo di Kafka e, più curiosamente, quello di Sade». Uno sconvolgente mélange di finzione, reportage, lirismo. Realizzato nel 1947-48 da Alfréd Radok all’interno del vero campo di concentramento di Terezin/Theresienstadt. Un’opera molto amata dal giovane Alain Resnais. Il dvd del restauro è arricchito da cinegiornali e documentari di varie epoche. (Lorenzo Codelli)

Questo restauro 2K di Variety di Bette Gordon evidenzia chiaramente che si tratta di un film straordinario, prodotto da una miriade di talenti provenienti dal mondo del cinema, dell’arte, della musica e della letteratura indipendenti americani, con una visione marcatamente femminista. Questa edizione blu-ray curata da Kino Lorber offre una valida scelta di materiali d’archivio, testi inediti e un inestimabile commento audio della stessa regista, inserendo Variety a pieno titolo tra i classici moderni, uno dei film più geniali del cinema americano sui piaceri del voyeurismo. The 2K restoration of Bette Gordon’s Variety makes it abundantly clear that this is an exceptional film, produced by a constellation of talent from the world of American independent cinema, art, music and literature, with a bold feminist vision. This blu-ray presentation from Kino Lorber supports the film superbly with archive production imagery, new writing and an invaluable audio commentary from the director herself. MÄDCHEN IN UNIFORM (Germany, 1931) by Leontine Sagan – BFI (blu-ray + dvd)

Appropriata e interessante presentazione di un film che è stato lungamente troppo poco diffuso. Questa splendida edizione del film manifesto dell’anti autoritarismo firmato da Léontine Sagan rende giustizia al suo spirito artistico e ribelle così come al suo valore sia nel contesto della cultura cinematografica di Weimar che in quello delle origini del cinema queer. Davvero apprezzabile il lavoro di restauro curato da Deutsche Filminstitut e Filmmuseum, e il commento audio di Jenni Olson che ci guida attraverso la scoperta di straordinari contenuti extra, approfondite analisi del film, della sua uscita e della sua influenza nel XXI secolo. A fitting presentation of a film that has long been too rarely screened. This beautifully considered release of Léontine Sagan’s landmark anti-authoritarian film does justice to its artistry and rebellious spirit as well as its value both in the context of Weimar film culture and the long history of queer cinema. The restoration work by the Deutsches Filminstitut and Filmmuseum is very welcome and the feature-length audio commentary by Jenni Olson leads a set of exceptional extras, which provide thoughtful analysis of the film, its exhibition history and its resonance in the 21st century. MANDABI (Senegal, 1968) by Ousmane Sembène – The Criterion Collection (blu-ray)

Una meravigliosa presentazione del restauro in 4K del primo film in assoluto realizzato nella lingua africana Wolof dal padre del cinema africano – Ousmane Sembène, e uno dei film più notevoli e influenti proveniente dal continente africano. Questo blu-ray è splendidamente prodotto e confezionato con un fantastico design di copertina e sorprendenti contenuti speciali, tra cui il cortometraggio Tauw dello stesso Sembène. A wonderful presentation of the 4K restoration of the first ever film made in the African language Wolof by the Father of African cinema – Ousmane Sembène – one of the most significant and influential films from the African continent. The blu-ray is beautifully produced and packaged with a stunning cover design and amazing special features including the short film Tauw by Sembène himself, making it, in my opinion, the Best Single Release. PETER NESTLER. 9 Films de 1962 à 2008 (Germany, 1962-2009) – Survivance (dvd)

Survivance ha il nome adatto per rendere omaggio al quasi sconosciuto documentarista tedesco Peter Nestler. Jean-Marie Straub se ne lamentava già nel 1967. Scoprire un’opera così potente attraverso un’uscita DVD, che copre oltre quarant’anni di produzione, è un’imbarazzante ammissione di ignoranza o una benedizione mascherata. Vedere questi documentari sugli schermi televisivi o nei festival non può essere paragonato a questa possibilità che ora abbiamo di seguire la crescita di Nestler, la sua ricerca della giusta distanza e il porsi le giuste domande.  (Philippe Garnier) 

Survivance is a well-named label to pay tribute to a documentarist as secret and as little known as Germany’s Peter Nestler. Jean-Marie Straub lamented this as early as 1967. To discover such a powerful work in a DVD release that covers over forty years is either an embarrassing admission of ignorance or a blessing in disguise, as catching these documentaries on TV screens or in festivals cannot compare with following Nestler’s progress, his research for the right distance, and the right questions. Best Film (The Peter von Bagh Award)

LA ROUE (France, 1922) by Abel Gance – Pathé Films / La Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé

Un restauro monumentale per un film monumentale. Pietra miliare nella storia del cinema, La Roue fu rimaneggiato più di una volta dallo stesso Abel Gance, subendo inoltre l’incuria degli anni. Il restauro, condotto sotto la preziosa supervisione della Fondation Jérome Seydoux-Pathé con la collaborazione della Cinémathèque Française e della Cinémathèque Suisse ha permesso di recuperare la versione più vicina a quella che fu proiettata per la prima volta nel 1931: sei ore di film in blu-ray che confermano l’affermazione di Cocteau «esiste un cinema prima e dopo La Roue come esiste una pittura prima e dopo Picasso». Completano l’opera un intero dvd di extra e un libro che ripercorre scrupolosamente la storia del film e del suo restauro eseguito presso l’Immagine Ritrovata Bologna-Paris. (Paolo Mereghetti)

A monumental restoration for a monumental film. A milestone in the history of cinema, La Roue was remodelled more than once by Abel Gance himself, also suffering the neglect of the years. The restoration, carried out under the precious supervision of the Fondation Jérome Seydoux-Pathé with the collaboration of the Cinémathèque Française and the Cinémathèque Suisse, made it possible to recover the version closest to the one that was shown for the first time in 1931: six hours of film on blu-ray, which confirm Cocteau’s statement “there is cinema before and after La Roue, just as there is painting before and after Picasso”. An entire DVD of extras and an accompanying book to complete the work, which scrupulously traces the history of the film and its restoration by L’Immagine Ritrovata Bologna-Paris. (Paolo Mereghetti)

SPRING NIGHT SUMMER NIGHT
(USA, 1967) by J.L. Anderson – Flicker Alley and Nicolas Winding Refn/by NWR (blu-ray + dvd)

Il film country, scioccante, girato in bianco e nero da Joseph L. Anderson che ha debuttato a Pesaro nel 1967 con artisti del calibro di Godard, visto dal pubblico americano solo nei drive-in rurali e lanciato nel 1970 dal distributore di soft-porno Joseph Brenner con il titolo lascivo Miss Jessica Is Pregnant. Se Faces di John Cassavetes non fosse stato selezionato al posto del lavoro di Anderson al New York Film Festival del 1967, forse non avremmo dovuto aspettare mezzo secolo per scoprire questo straordinario esempio di Americana. Opere degli anni Sessanta come Wanda o A Killer of Sheep ci hanno mostrato l’America urbana dall’interno, Anderson fa lo stesso per l’America rurale, una versione moderna dell’incesto e delle madri nubili nel sud dell’Ohio.

Joseph L. Anderson’s black and white country shocker premiered in Pesaro in 1967 with the likes of Godard, but the American public saw it only in rural drive-ins, released in 1970 by the soft-porn distributor Joseph Brenner under the prurient title Miss Jessica Is Pregnant. Had not John Cassavetes’ Faces been selected over Anderson’s work at the 1967 New York Film Festival, we may not have waited half a century to discover this extraordinary piece of Americana which may be its equal. Sixties works like Wanda or A Killer of Sheep showed us urban America from the inside, Anderson does the same for rural America, a modern take on incest and unwed mothers in southern Ohio.

Un eccezionale restauro della Deutsche Kinemathek e della Cineteca di Bologna, che ci offre la possibilità di apprezzare questo capolavoro dell’Espressionismo Tedesco in tutta la sua raffinatezza, con grandi interpretazioni di William Dieterle, Conrad Veidt, Emil Jannings e Werner Krauss. L’impressionante serie di supplementi, tra cui l’erudito commento di Adrian Martin, offre le chiavi per i misteri del baule degli orrori di Paul Leni e senza dubbio incoraggerà visioni ripetute del film. Complimenti anche per le due nuove colonne sonore: la musica per pianoforte di Richard Siedhoff e la composizione eseguita dall’Ensemble Musikfabrik.

An outstanding restoration by Deutsche Kinemathek and Cineteca di Bologna offers us the chance to enjoy this summit of German Expressionism in all its finery, with performances by William Dieterle, Conrad Veidt, Emil Jannings and Werner Krauss. The impressive set of supplements, including Adrian Martin’s erudite commentary, offer keys to the mysteries of Paul Leni’s portmanteau horror and will no doubt encourage repeat viewings of the film. Kudos also to two new soundtracks: Richard Siedhoff’s piano score and the composition performed by Ensemble Musikfabrik.

Un poco noto documentario “epico” sul paesaggio industriale dell’Illinois nei primi anni ‘30 diretto da uno scrittore e fotografo tedesco, che diventa un esemplare esposizione della cultura dell’ ‘Americana’.

A little known ‘epic documentary’ about the industrial landscape of Illinois in the early 1930s by a German writer-photographer that becomes an exemplary show of the ‘Americana’.

TIRO AL PICCIONE
(Italy, 1961) di Giuliano Montaldo – Penny Video / Cineteca Nazionale (blu-ray + dvd)

Finalmente disponibile, nel bel restauro della Cineteca Nazionale, il primo film di Giuliano Montaldo, che scandalizzò mezza Italia perché nel 1961 osava raccontare la storia di chi aveva scelto di aderire alla Repubblica di Salò ma che oggi dimostra tutta la sua lungimiranza nel mostrare le contraddizioni della nostra Storia. Un prezioso booklet e un’intervista allo stesso Montaldo aiutano a ricostruire la storia del film.

Finally made available, with the beautiful restoration work done by the Cineteca Nazionale, Giuliano Montaldo’s first film, which scandalised half of Italy because in 1961 he dared to tell the story of those who had chosen to join the Republic of Salò, yet today demonstrates all his foresight in showing the contradictions of our history. A precious booklet and an interview with Montaldo himself help to reconstruct the film’s history.

(USA, 1963-1978) by Martin Scorsese – The Criterion Collection (blu-ray)

La mia scelta è per il nuovo restauro digitale in 4K dei primi cortometraggi di Martin Scorsese. Questi film si caratterizzano per una qualità candida e intima, ma allo stesso tempo contengono molti dei segni distintivi dello stile del regista che si evolverà nei suoi lavori successivi. È davvero meraviglioso che questi film possano essere nuovamente apprezzati dal pubblico.

My personal favourite is the new 4K digital restoration of the early short films by Martin Scorsese. The films have a candid and intimate quality, but they also reflect many of the early signs of his filmmaking style that evolved in his later works. It is wonderful that these films have been revived and brought back into the public eye.
