Film Notes

“I am living in a new building. I want to fall in colourful love” reads a girl’s newspaper advert which begins the film W szponach seksu. Rarely did Antonisz make a film using a camera, hence this film comes from a time when he was exploring new avenues of expression. Freeze frames and time reversal are also implemented here while the film stock was altered by being directly painted on, all common tricks in his later films. Although it all seems like an innocent joke, the film ran into problems with censorship and was withdrawn from distribution due to a jibe at socialist housing policies. Frenzied admirers swarm to respond to the advert, sprinting through scenes of ever unfinished, derelict blocks while the girl sits waiting numbly in her cold, bare flat. Unsurprisingly, the socialist authorities did not see the funny side of these observations and the gritty pictures were deemed unacceptable in a picture perfect state fuelled by propaganda. The last of the amorous suitors who manages to bring colour to the girl and to the film itself is Mieczysław Świecicki, a member of the famous literary collective The Cellar Under the Rams from Cracow.
