Film Notes

It was Sjöström’s first film as a director, with himself in the lead. The croft girl and the gardener’s son are in love, but the gardener opposes the union. He sends his son away in order to seduce the croft girl. At the release of the film, the censor’s judgement was very severe. The film was totally banned. To the decision was added this note: The film as such is opposed to good conduct and justice through its depiction of death as something beautiful’’.
