Film Notes

Léonce has settled down. He married a fascinating young woman, who is a bit jealous and sentimental, but it has its benefits: she pampers, fondles, attends to, and loves him, and being a simple, sweet good boy, he couldn’t ask for more from life. Hence, Léonce is happy. He eats well, smokes a good pipe, curls up in a comfortable chair, and lets time pass, only hoping – like Napoleon’s mother – that it will last as long as possible. […] But his friends are on guard. When someone is happy, his friends are always on guard, taking fatal action. One of them writes to him: “…you’re getting weighed down and old: in short, you’re becoming the model husband, all home and family. Get off the leash, my old friend Léonce, leave your young bride for a while and come to dinner at Larue’s tomorrow with your good old time companions…”
