Film Notes

The leading actors in this film are two great names from Italian silent film: Francesca Bertini and Gustavo Serena. Together for the first time, both worked for FAI more or less during the same period. From here, a great artistic partnership was born, leading to the making of Assunta Spina. Though period films were usually presented with stencil coloring, this copy was black and white: the original negative used for the restoration bore no signs indicating stencil coloring. In any case, it would not have been possible to reconstruct stencil coloring from a negative. The Cinémathèque Française restored the print. The intertitles, which were missing in the original, were recreated by Renée Lichtig and Jean Gili based on the original film scenario held at the Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal.
