Homage to Clarence Brown

How can such a brilliant film-maker be so little known? Trained by Maurice Tourneur, Brown became one of the silent era’s great pictorialists, but at no point did he sacrifice emotion for the image. For these silent dramas alone he deserves immortality even had he not been Garbo’s favourite director. Jean Renoir once remarked that he thought more of Clarence Brown than Brown did of himself.
