Film Notes

The only known copy of John Ford’s first feature film was thought to be in black and white, with intertitles in Czech and with only a rather modest definition of the image. Two years ago the Nederlands Filmmuseum was able to find in Holland the Czech nitrate copy in colour. It contained tinting and three splendid scenes in toned colour. They immediately got to work restoring it. Thanks to the collaboration of the George Eastman House, which had a 16 mm American version of the film, copied from the AFI, the original intertitles could be reconstructed.
Bologna’s Cineteca took care of the colour restoration in their laboratory, L’Immagine Ritrovata.
