Film Notes

A series of films in the form of a mock programme to suggest that exotic elements pervaded all genres of the early film programme. ‘Exotic’ here is understood in a broad sense, in that cinemagoing – in the words of historian Nicholas Hiley – is in itself a kind of exotic experience: a newsreel flashing from one continent to another or a view of the life of people that are distant socially rather than geographically (such as film stars), as well as, of course, films of traditionally exotic people and cultures.
Nico de Klerk
