Film Notes
Never has a film been shot in more dramatic conditions. Every week a new development in the international situation threw our organisation into panic and confusion. There were several partial mobilisations that forced me to replace technicians and actors. We expected the declaration of war at any moment. We lived in complete suspense.
Hitler entered Czechoslovakia and conquered it. Otto Heller, who as usual was my camera operator, cried on set: he had lost his country and his family in one go. Electricians would come down from the gangways in the middle of a sequence to leave as they had just received their travel papers… The situation was shocking: we lived the atmosphere that I had to fictionally recreate for the script.
Edmond T. Gréville, Positif, janvier 1968
