Film Notes
It’s with reference to film history that Michael Henry Wilson explains how the idea to accompany Martin Scorsese for the filming of Kundun came to him. “Scorsese’s encounter with Tibet, I told myself, is an event in itself, as important as Renoir’s with India. Then I mentioned The River to him, one of the films which determined his vocation: ‘Wouldn’t it be fantastic if there was a documentary on the shooting of that masterpiece? There really ought to be a witness, with a camera, on the Kundun set!’ Marty thought for a moment, then nodded, a big smile on his face.” We follow the film-maker to Morocco, sit in on his work sessions, listen to his comments and his thoughts as to how Kundun links back to his other films, and, with his usual passion, how his film influences inform this particular film. Wilson also interviews Scorsese’s colleagues, and the Tibetan refugees who feature in the film. Finally he visits the Dalai Lama, whose first-hand testimony gives a perspective on the events reconstructed in Kundun.
