Film Notes

Even though Bonne chance! was, from the moment of its release, eclipsed by the film which some consider Guitry’s most serious work, Pasteur, it nonetheless remains one of the director’s most beautiful and innovative films. With Bonne chance!, Sacha Guitry points a finger, declaring that between theatre and cinema there exists only a distant relationship, a point of view on which he was himself to comment ironically two years later, in the magazine “Pour vous”: “I have said too often, and I have often enough repeated, that cinema and theatre should not be compared – yes, truly I have said it too much not to have the right to say the contrary today.
“There comes a moment when one is tired of always saying the same thing. Moreover, in the event, I do not tire because I have said it too much, but because I am exasperated to hear it repeated by others. There are opinions which one does not like to see shared by anyone else. Need I add that the day when the films which I make no longer have the favours of the public, my new opinion will once again automatically be modified.
“The advantage of such versatility seems to me evident. Because the fact of attaching only a relative importance to one’s own opinion confers on you the absolute right to attach none at all to the opinion of others”.

Sacha Guitry, in “Pour vous”, n. 472, Paris, 1 December 1937 103
