Film Notes

PB: After Bluebeard, you made Strange Illusion. How did the idea for that come about?
EGU: [Fritz] Rotter’s play in New York, Letters from Lucerne, with Gerte Mosheim, was a big flop. I saw it and it was very nice, though not well written – Rotter mostly did musical comedies. I got Fromkess to buy the play, but when we wrote the script I went so far away from Rotter’s play that we sold it back to him! I was fascinated at that time with psychoanalysis and this story was about a father-son relationship. The picture was very well received critically. Whether it made money I do not know. At that time I was already chafing at the bit and wanted out of PRC. (Peter Bogdanovich, Edgar G. Ulmer. An Interview, Film Culture, 58.59.60, 1974)
