Film Notes
After World War II several successful stars and directors attempted to become independent of the studios by forming their own production companies. Among them was John Ford, who together with Merian C. Cooper reorganised a company they had formed earlier, named Argosy Pictures. Argosy then made a four picture deal, later extended, with RKO, in which Argosy would retain artistic control while splitting the costs and profits. Ford’s first picture under this deal was The Fugitive, based on Graham Greene’s The Power and the Glory. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon was only Ford’s third feature film in colour, after Drums Along the Mohawk (1939) and 3 Godfathers (1948), but Cooper had a long-standing interest in Technicolor, being an enthusiast from the early 1930s when Disney began using Technicolor’s new three-strip process for his cartoons. Cooper invested in Technicolor and together with wealthy manufacturer Jock Whitney and his cousin C.V. Whitney formed a company, Pioneer, to make films in the new process. This company was merged with Selznick-International, and David O. Selznick proposed to Ford to make Stagecoach as a colour spectacular starring Gary Cooper and Marlene Dietrich. But Ford was unshakeably committed to John Wayne.
