Film Notes

Popeye the Sailor Meets Ali Baba’s Forty Thieves is a significant improvement on the first two-reel Popeye film. The long and te- dious musical introduction has been replaced by Abu Hassan’s much briefer introduction and the one-liners and visual wit are much sharper than they were in the previous film. Popeye’s quips are particularly funny. When he comes across Arab inscriptions he mumbles «This Chinese is Greek to me», and there is just the right level of word and film play when he rolls like a bowling ball into a group of ten of Hassan’s men and comments «How does that strike you?»
