After Pathé Frères set up its subsidiary S.C.A.G.L. in 1908, it went on to open others. Film d’Arte Italiana and Le Film Russe went into production in Italy and Russia respectively, employing mostly local staff. Le Châtiment du samouraï was the first authenticated work of The Japanese Film, a brand which would generate about fifty films in the years to 1917. The Japanese Film dramas, shot in Europe using Japanese actors on tour over here, are unique records, testifying to the wave of japonisme that was sweeping Europe at the time and documenting the Japanese theatre in an age of modernisation.
