Unhappy with the work conditions and especially the limited equipment at the Niles studio as well as being behind the production company’s schedule, Chaplin brought In the Park (one of the series’ one-reel comedies along with By the Sea) to the screen just one week after the release of The Champion. It unswervingly adheres to the Keystone format of films following the farcical misadventures of couples in love set around the benches and beverage kiosks of Westlake Park in Los Angeles, like Caught in the Rain or Twenty Minutes of Love. The plot is basically non-existent – the theft of a purse is a pretext –, and the Tramp’s character seems to have regressed to a more awkward and infantile version of earlier films in which making faces, kicking and throwing stones took up the greater part of the action, as is this case here with Bud Jamison and Leo White as targets.
