Aspects de la Turquie, hier et aujourd’hui

Between 1963 and 1964, Pialat shot seven shorts in Turkey. Six of these, shot in black and white (Istanbul, La Corne d’or, Maître Galip, Pehlivan, Byzance) and in colour (Bosphore) by Willy Kurant, can still be seen today. Samy Halfon, who at the time was producing L’immortelle by Alain Robbe-Grillet in Turkey, was behind them.

Thanks to its harmony between commentary and images this is the most classic film of the series and the most picturesque (the shot of the shore under the fog and the fisherman’s boat on the water are composed like landscape paintings). Unlike Istanbul that shows city life and evokes the various stages of its past (Byzantium, Constantinople, Istanbul) through different locations and monuments (ramparts, mosques).
