RÊVE AU TUSCHINSKI

Film Notes

After seventy-five years of exile Mr. Engel (Max von Sydow), comes back in his childhood’s cinematographic ‘Palace’, the Tuschinski Theater of Amsterdam. Here, he starts dreaming… In his dream starts a long talk with Abraham Icek Tuschinski, the founder of this cinema ‘Palace’. Thus is told the extraordinary history of this theater and that of the fabulous and tragic destiny of its creator.

At the turn of the 20th century Abraham Icek Tuschinski leaves his natal shtetl for exile. He stopped in Rotterdam and, before embarking for the USA, organized a canteen for immigrants. From there, and instead of leaving, he founded a cinematic empire whose Theater Tuschinski is the jewel. Inaugurated in October 1920, it is a true masterpiece combining Art Deco, Art Nouveau and the Amsterdam School. The Theater Tuschinski has enjoyed a dazzling success. For nearly twenty years of brilliant and creative activity, and despite the rise of intolerance in the Netherlands, Abraham Tuschinski continues his cinematic dream and will never abandon it. The Nazis would have to invade the Netherlands, deport all Jews and spoliate their property to put an end to his dream of cinema.
