Music to My Ears (and Eyes)

Once again music takes centre stage (and centre screen) of Il Cinema Ritrovato festival. A programme full of musical events, spotted around the festival venues.

The first event to take note (Saturday June 24th, 4 pm, Cinema Jolly) is Rouben Mamoulian’s short film The Flute of Krishna (USA/1926), which will be accompanied by Stephen Horne on flute.
The Orchestra of Teatro Comunale di Bologna returns to the Piazza Maggiore stage for two breathtaking cineconcerts to be conducted by Timothy Brock.
The masterpieces with full orchestral accompaniment are Stella Dallas by Henry King (26 June), featuring a score by Stephen Horne, and Ernst Lubitsch’s Lady Windermere’s Fan (30 June) with a score by Timothy Brock.
On 25 June, in the more intimate setting of Piazzetta Pasolini, the fantastic duo of Frank Bockius (drums) and John Sweeney (piano) will provide the music for a journey into the “Best of” cinema in the year 1903. The mesmerising light and smoke of the carbon arc projector will enhance the magic.
The dreamlike La Voix du rossignol and the comical La fuga di Socrate on 28 June will again be accompanied by Frank Bockius, this time with Daniele Furlati on piano.
A day later, on 29 June La Souriante Madame Beudet by Germaine Dulac takes the spotlight, interpreted by the unique sonic incursions of Stefano Pilia and Valentina Magaletti.
The final evening in the Piazzetta, 1 July, will be a 1960s musical party, entirely dedicated to the 16mm screening of Scopitone, the mother of all music videos.

Don’t forget to pass by the Bookfair, where there is an area reserved for CAM Sugar‘s collection of vinyls and vintage discs.
