Film Notes

A bizarre lot met in the dressing rooms of the Liberated Theater: an editor, an executioner, and a madman. Following a brief and rather secret discussion, Voskovec and Werich decided, in agreement with the editor, to write something about their film Hej-Rup!. This is the result:
«While working on Hej-Rup!, we enjoyed full artistic freedom: we, Mac Fric, and our collaborators. This obvious need in any artistic undertaking is unfortunately so rare in Czech cinema that it must be underscored when it occurs. Differently from other businessmen, Emil Meissner didn’t try to have a say in anything. Thanks to him, we were not obliged to deal with: 1.Ladies who are relatives or acquaintances of gentlemen who have a relationship with the film world, or who claim to have one. 
2. Gentlemen who are in turn acquaintances of the ladies linked to the above mentioned gentlemen.
 3. Any other relatives of these ladies and gentlemen. In the same way, no one required that the sun in our film set exclusively behind the Castle of Prague, or that in the second reel there be a shot of seagulls feeding, or that at the end the protagonist of the film sing «Good night, my love» (Dobrú noc, má milá) in a traditional Chod costume, which also has to do with national lacemaking. We were saved all this by Emil Meissner, and we thank him for it.
