Film Notes
The Town is the archetypical production of the Office of War Information Overseas Branch, whose task was to show to the whole world the American way of life and “the democracy at work”. The film was director Josef Von Sternberg’s only documentary effort, and it explores the European cultural roots of an American small town – Madison, Indiana. Despite their diversity of backgrounds, each citizen of Madison has a profound respect for the ways of his neighbours.
