Film Notes
That studio officials preferred to keep Kuleshov at bay from 1935 to 1940 was not because they mistrusted his professional skills. On the contrary, when the then Sojuzdetfil’m studio director saw Evgenij Snejder’s hopeless rushes for An Incident in the Volcano he decided that only such high-class professionals as Kuleshov and Hohlova could salvage this film. They did salvage it – even though some of the inside-the-volcano shots may look pretty awful, flying stunts in the sky look OK, and the bravura ending on board the ship is truly enjoyable. I don’t think I need to explain that Sojuzdetfil’m – the studio at which this film was made – specialized in films for the young.
