Film Notes

Why were there so many pagan queens in the cinema around 1910? Powerful and often murderous women such as Semiramis, Cleopatra, Salome, Thaïs and Messalina cut a glittering path through fin de siècle opera, painting and dance theatre. In the cinema the great female roles central to such melodramatic pieces opened the way for the diva film.
