Film Notes

Between 1970-1976 Welles shot The Other Side of the Wind in the States and in France. After shooting was completed, due to both financial and legal problems, Welles managed to edit only part of the film, without succeeding in finishing it. Following indications in the script, this video unites scenes found in the Orson Welles Collection at the Filmmuseum München with others contained in the work print. Some of those scenes were presented to the public by Welles on the occasion of an evening organized by the American Film Institute on 9 February 1975. Existing material in 35 mm was transferred to DigiBeta and then digitally reworked: no changes were made to the editing nor repairs of major damage to images, only general corrections were made to color and sound when showing deterioration. The film negative is still located at a developing lab in Paris, the Welles’s work print is in a Los Angeles storage facility. Oja Kodar, Gary Graver and Peter Bogdanovich are working hard to find the funding necessary to complete the film.
