Film Notes

In its beginnings, the aim of Film d’Arte Italiana was to remake theatrical and literary masterpieces by the most representative authors of all times: Shakespeare, Schiller, Wilde, Dumas…
Re Lear was «a success, a complete success. Marvelous photography, incomparable photography in natural colors, Pathé’s much envied secret; the mise en scène is quite accurate, the landscapes beautiful, and Novelli’s performance in the role of King Lear is simply divine. (Eldea, «La Cine-Fono e la Rivista Fono-Cinematografica», 10/12/1910)

The film furthermore distinguishes itself for the presence of Francesca Bertini in one of her first film appearances. In the role of Cordelia, Bertini had already begun to establish herself as a prima donna – this was at the end of 1910 – obtaining a leading role. Charles Pathé had noticed her in her debut FAI film Il Trovatore (1910). Seeing her potential, he pushed to have Bertini assigned to more important roles. From here on, the road was paved for her.
