Film Notes

Frank Capra said of his wartime filmmaking experiences that next to the Why We Fight series, he is most proud of the Army-Navy Screen Magazine. The Screen Magazine was a bi-weekly news and information subject that was shown before the feature film in all military motion picture theaters during the war.

The most popular feature of the Screen Magazine was the cartoon character Private Snafu created by Theodor “DrSeuss” Geisel (and animated by Warner Brothers), Snafu was lazy, stubborn, unpatriotic, undisciplined, and invariably insisted on doing everything wrong. In the end, Snafu always learned the hard way.
