Film Notes

Looking at Germany’s recent past, this documentary dismantles all the mechanisms that permitted Adolf Hitler to gradually gain power in Europe, starting in 1933 (“Mein Kampf”= My Promises = My Lies). A number of episodes are cited: the remilitarization of the Rhineland, Anschlüss (annexation of Austria), annexation of Sudetenland, the meeting between Hitler and Chamberlain before Hitler took over Prague, the invasions of Poland and Denmark, and the signing of the German-Soviet agreement on August 21, 1939. Speeches by Hitler accompany each episode, showing the contradiction between his words and his actions. Images are shown of the terrible war, different aspects of the Nazi regime (auto da fé, official art, embezzlement by Führer’s followers, “new cross, new Bible, new God”). The film ends with an eloquent sequence of parallel editing: a “docile” flock is slowly led to the slaughterhouse (“the German people”).
