Film Notes

[…] One 35mm roll was a documentary made in 1919 for the Ford Motor Company – Home Made, a Ford Educational on portable housing. It seemed a routine documentary until I saw a close-up of a calendar leaf. I was so startled that I stopped the machine. For that was the very image that was repeated throughout One Week. […] And there was no doubt whatsoever that One Week was a parody of this Ford Educational. For there was a wedding, with a Ford T, exactly as in the Keaton, and the recurring image of the calendar leaf was intended to show how the house could be built in One Week.
One Week is a brilliant film, beautifully thought-out, impeccably shot – such a quantum leap from the Arbuckles as to make them all seem positively crude. And when he made it, Keaton was a mere twenty-four years old.

I remember being astounded when I first saw the fall which Buster executes, stepping out of his bathroom door into thin air. Keaton described how a deep hole was dug, filled with straw, the turf replaced on top. […] At the end of the day his elbow had swollen to double its size – and the rest of his body was swelling, too. Al Gilmore, his unit’s physical trainer, kept him under a hot shower for fifteen minutes and rubbed him down with olive oil.
