Film Notes

A bourgeois couple visit a low dive to have some fun and observe the Paris underworld. A witty and accurate backstage story and a self-referential metamovie. The Valse chaloupée was exactly this: a stage production for the middle class, with bohemian role-playing legitimising the explicit sexuality and violence of the show. The singer, dancer and actress Polaire (Emilie Marie Bouchaud, 1874-1939) also performed the apache dance in New York in 1910. She was distinguished by an unbelievably tiny waist of, supposedly, only 14 inches (36 cm). We could not find the righthoders of Yves Mirande’s work, but we are ready to face their request.
