Film Notes
Unusual in respect to the genre of films normally produced by FAI, La sedia del diavolo was defined «a winning drama of brigands». «The excellence in invention, treatment, and acting, seen in this film, is such that it would be no exaggeration to predict it as one of the major successes of Film d’Arte Italiana which, by continuing to vary its repertoire, is establishing itself as a first-class producer in all genres of cinema-theater». («Rivista Pathé», 15/9/1912)
Indeed, as predicted, the film met with enormous success. «The film has been beautifully staged – indeed, unusually in one respect – for in addition to the effective contrast between the mountainous country of the brigands retreat and the scenes which take place in and about Rome, the interiors are quite convincing, and give no suggestions of the photographic studio. The costumes and accessory details are exceedingly picturesque, and give a very fair idea of its period, the earlier decades of the last century.» («The Bioscope», 19/9/1912)
La sedia del diavolo was restored in 1996 from an original nitrate negative found at the Cinémathèque Française. The copy was complete, but the intertitles were lacking. An original script found at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Département des Arts du Spectacle, made it possible to reconstruct the intertitles and translate them into Italian. Thanks to Desmetcolor it was possible to return the print to its original combination of tinting and toning.
