Film Notes
While the activity of Pouittes constitutes the conclusive phase of French burlesque, the Léonce series, also produced by Gaumont, directed by Léonce Perret who also plays in the leading role, marks the birth of the comedy that, progressively, emerged and freed itself from the comic genre.
“Is it necessary to cite as an example his charming comedy La Lumière et l’Amour, that obtained, roughly one year ago, considerable success all over the world?
We are going cite, of the same genre: Margaret et Bénédit, La Rançon du bonheur, Le Mystére des roches de Kador, that each became sensational triumphs for their leading actors and for the Gaumont studio that produced them.
In the detective drama, Léonce Perret was incomparable. The Mains de fer series is still fresh in all of our memories. While these extraordinary and terrifying adventures unfolded on the screen, we trembled with fear in the movie theater. Mains de fer contre La Bande aux gants blancs literally aroused the enthusiasm of the spectators […].
Moreover, in each film he found a different approach to his acting that proves to be consistently fascinating and convincing.
Today, Léonce is the public’s favorite. His success equals that of one of the Kings of the screen. He is just as famous as the most renowned of them. It could not have been otherwise”. (O. Reol, The Perret touch, in Le Cinéma et l’echo du cinéma réunis, n° 79, 29 August 1913, in 1895, 1986,1,1.)
