Film Notes

Only the first reel of the two-reel Jeugddag te Vierhouten (Youth Day Vierhouten) has survived. Reel 1 shows the daily routine of the holiday camp: the pouring rain on the first day, getting up, washing and breakfasting, a country walk through the Veluwe national park (the sun is shining again), preparing dinner, etc. Certain shots display Ivens’ feeling for image composition, but in general the film does not rise above the level of a newsreel. Most of the footage was filmed by Ivens’ assistants Joop Huisken and Mark Kolthoff. It shows the importance in the Netherlands of the Joris Ivens Studio as a training centre for young filmmakers.
