Film Notes

“I’ve felt lonely in the outside world, and for that very reason, I’ve taken refuge in a community of feeling, however illusory”. In the early fifties Ingmar Bergman got himself a cine-camera, a 9.5 mm Bell & Howell, which he often used both privately and when he was on the set. Images from the Playground builds from this footage and offers a lively and varied representation of one of the greatest artists in cinema at work… and play. “When I come into the studio with my camera and colleagues around me, we always seem to be starting a game… like when I was small and took my toys out of the toy cupboard. It’s exactly the same feeling”, Bergman said on one occasion. These images from the director’s grown-up playground are accompanied with Bergman’s own commentaries from various interviews. The actresses Harriet Andersson and Bibi Andersson also contribute their own memories.
