Film Notes

The director’s 27th feature, which stars extracts of films such as Antonioni’s L’avventura, Fellini’s La Dolce Vita and De Sica’s Bicycle Thieves, also takes a look at how Italian cinema influenced the Italian-American community in New-York. ”I’ve always linked my movie going experience to my family. On Friday nights, when Italian movies happened to be on, other relatives and neighbours would join in. My grandparents were Sicilian emigrants who were barely literate in Italian. So it was through Italian films that I actually began to discover my family. Many questions raised in me at that very early age needed answers and the only place I could find them was in movies”, Scorsese explains of his second documentary on cinema, alongside a film on American cinema.
