Film Notes
The state funeral as military parade. In the coffin on the gun carriage lies Edward VII (1841-1910, reigned 1901-1910), who was also known as Bertie or “the uncle of Europe”. The best-dressed man and most charming bon vivant of his time, he loved Paris, horse-racing, gambling and beautiful women and he had countless affairs (with, among others, Sarah Bernhardt and la belle Otéro). His military honours were only titular. Intelligent, tolerant and progressive, he is thought of today as Britain’s first modern monarch.
