Film Notes
A traveling shot that reveals a house on the banks of the Loire followed by an extreme close up shot of a bouquet of flowers and some detective paperbacks, somber music arranged by Pierre Jansen: the opening of Claude Chabrol, l’entomologiste invites us into a world of unsettling familiarity. Two old “Cahiers du cinéma” critics from the detective period meet again. The filmmaker (Chabrol) explains his work conditions with a precision that borders obsession, and the critic (Jean Douchet) talks about realism and setting. In front of the image of characters from the film d’auteur La femme infidèle (The Unfaithful Wife), the two protagonists of Claude Chabrol, l’entomologiste seem to be part of a mystery that no one will ever truly resolve.
