Film Notes
The World Cinema Foundation supports the restoration of the behind- the-scene footage of 18 films by Bergman. 14 hours of previously unseen material held by the Ingmar Bergman Foundation’s Archives.
Arilds Klippor, Southern part of Sweden, 1953. A thirty-five year old Ingmar Bergman as we have never seen him before. The film is Gycklarnas afton (Sawdust and Tinsel) (which he defined “my conscious reply to Dupont’s Varieté”), the scene Albert’s humiliation. Bergman’s eye gets past the clowns and the carpenters to follow, in adoration, his leading actress – and then lover – Harriet Andersson.
