Il Cinema Ritrovato: a slice of cinephile heaven
Il Cinema Ritrovato is a cinephile’s paradise – matter of fact – and the festival offers, through its programme, screenings and events – starting from restored classics (but also from archives, rediscovered films, lectures, meetings with filmmakers and experts) – that celebrate and allow the public to refine their passion for the seventh art.
An arduous task in itself, we have come up with a short list of must-see films and events for any serious cinephile:
Let’s start with two deities of cinema, Sergej Ėjzenštejn and Jean-Luc Godard:
- Monday 26, Tuesday 27 e Thursday 29 June, 5.45 pm – Cinema Europa
“Documents and documentaries”: GODARD’S CINEMA LESSONS IN MONTREAL – Programme 1, Programme 2 e Programme 3 (Canada/1978); introduced by André Habib (Université de Montréal)
“In the spring of 1978, Jean-Luc Godard began, at the invitation of Serge Losique, director of the Conservatory of Cinematographic Art at Concordia University in Montreal, a long term ‘research’ on the history of cinema, in turn gardener, archaeologist, geologist, producer, rarely professor. These Montreal lectures were known to cinephiles through two main sources: the book Introduction à une véritable histoire du cinéma published in 1980 and an English translation by Timothy Barnard, published in 2014, Introduction to a True History of Cinema. These ‘lessons’ were to become the fertile ground for a seminal work of the Twentieth century: Histoire(s) du cinema (1987-1998). If these works are part of the library of all Godardians worthy of the name, few, until today, could claim to have seen and heard video recordings of these lessons”. - Wednesday 28 June, 5.15 pm – Auditorium – DAMSLab
“Documenti e documentari”: A TRIP TO TETLAPAYAC (GB-Japan/2022) by Ian Christie and Chiemi Shimada, introduced by the directors
“Sergei Eisenstein spent six frustrating months in Hollywood in 1930, during which all his projects were vetoed, despite the lavish promises that had brought the director of Battleship Potemkin to California. As he discovered, being world-famous cut little ice with Paramount Pictures. So what were he and his comrades Alexandrov and Tisse to do? Making a revolutionary epic in Mexico, with the freedom of sympathetic private funding, must have seemed a brilliant escape route”.
We continue with the “cinematic stream” (including also TV and advertising) of two worshipped intellectuals of the seventh art, Joe Dante and enrico ghezzi:
- Tuesday 27 June, 10 am – Cinema Europa
Special Event – Tribute to enrico ghezzi: GLI ULTIMI GIORNI DELL’UMANITÀ (Italy/2022) by enrico ghezzi and alessandro gagliardo; introduced by alessandro gagliardo - Friday 30 June, 6 pm – Cinema Europa
Special Event – Tribute to Joe Dante: THE MOVIE ORGY (USA/1966-2009) by Joe Dante, introduced by the director
Finally, our selection comes to an end with the Lessons in Cinema with three figures that reveal the behind the scenes of the film industry:
- Monday 26 June, 12 pm – Auditorium – DAMSLab
Lesson in Cinema ÉTERNITÉ DE LA CINÉPHILIE. Conversation between Gian Luca Farinelli and Thierry Frémaux, director of Cannes Film Festival and Institut Lumière, experts in the field with the broadest view of the film industry, from production to preservation, from distribution to festival programming. - Thursday 29 June, 12 pm – Auditorium – DAMSLab
Lesson in Cinema THE TITULAR BISHOPS OF HOLLYWOOD SILENT PICTURES. Dossier about intertitles in USA mute films, curated by Philippe Garnier
“Title writing in silent motion-pictures became an art around the mid-1920s and had only a few years to attain perfection before the arrival of sound rendered the craft obsolete. MGM’s top man Joseph Farnham became the first Academy Awards winner for Best Titles in 1929, and the last. The category was dropped the next year”. - Friday 30 June, 6.45 pm – Auditorium – DAMSLab
Lesson in Cinema CONVERSATION WITH JEREMY THOMAS, acclaimed and award-winning film producer, all-round ‘man of cinema’, driven by a deep love for the seventh art and an unbridled passion for life.
