Film Notes

The protagonist of the drama (Béla Lugosi) is a cynical, unscrupulous dowry hunter who overcomes his victims with his demonic charm. First, he seduces and marries a princess for her social status and wealth. His next victim is a post office employee, who commits suicide when she realizes that he only seduced her to get money from the post office. Having maneuvered to the edge of bankruptcy, he wishes to divorce the princess, hoping to get the hand and wealth of a baroness. As the princess is not willing to divorce him, he decides to poison her, but then the father of the suicidal girl kills him. Béla Lugosi, a member of the National Theatre (Budapest), played the main role in ten films at the Star Filmgyár in 1917 and 1918 under the name Arisztid Olt. Unfortunately, only this short fragment survived, showing him in the scene of the post office robbery with his sinister look that became famous later. Ila Lóth, his partner in this scene, was one of the most popular Hungarian female stars of the era.
