Film Notes

“I went into his office and said: “Bill, you want me to play the part in Margin for Error?” (William Goetz) said Yes […]”. I said: “But I’m not an actor, I’m a director and I will only do it if you also let me direct, as I directed the play and played in it. […] I will do it for free, and you pay me only as an actor”. […] And this is how I got back into directing again. I had promised this without reading the script, and it was awful.[…] So, with my own money, I hired a writer to help me re-write the script secretly. He was a man who later became a very well-known director called Samuel Fuller. He was at the time in Hollywood on leave, he was in the Army. […) After a week’s work, Bill Goetz called my agent and asked me to his office. I thought he was going to fire me. Instead he said he loved the rushes and he wanted to sign a contract”. (Gerald Pratley, The Cinema of Otto Preminger, London, 1971)
