Film Notes

In 1930, perhaps during Vigo’s October stay in Paris, Lods invited the director to follow part of the shooting of La Vie d’un fleuve: “Vigo, as my guest, was quite impressed by the short, three or four day trip, at least during the time he spent with us. I took him on board before Paris, and he got off after Paris, near Mantes. He took a lot of notes. I don’t know what about, but I’m sure that’s when he conceived of L’Atalante. Then, when he saw my film he met Jaubert, who had composed the music, and he asked him. And Jaubert obviously felt a need to return to the same waltz theme, which he placed and developed so well in L’Atalante.
