Film Notes

Victorin-Hippolyte Jasset died in the hospital at rue Antoine-Chantin on June 22, 1913. Like his previous film Protéa, his last film, Le Collier de Kali, was released posthumously. Themes such as adventure, crime and revenge are developed in pictorially composed, beautiful images. The exoticism of the oriental environment and the decoratively-filled indoor spaces are coherent aesthetic characteristics of the work of Jasset, and the greatest charm of this film. A rich adventurer, Charles Darsac, indulges his wife Henriette. She reads an article in a journal, reporting the discovery of the statue of goddess Kali in India. She wants to obtain the necklace containing a valuable jewel which adorns this statue. To please his whimsical wife, Charles sails to India and steals the necklace. A bayadere whose name is also Kali protects the goddess. She follows Charles Darsac to France and tries to regain the stolen necklace. The exotic environment of India, the trap and the wild beasts, all these sensational elements give thrilling aspects to this film. The cold beauty of Josette Andriot is terrific. Little Simone Genevois plays the role of the daughter of Darsac.
