Film Notes
The trailer starts and ends with the logo of Sascha Film, the Austrian production company of Die Sklavenkönigin directed by Mihály Kertész, better known as Michael Curtiz, the name he adopted after moving to Hollywood.
A good trailer does not reveal a film’s plot but instead suggests its atmosphere, showing the main characters and some compelling scenes. These promotional clips must captivate and convince without communicating too much. The trailer of this 1924 epic film shows that the action takes place in Egypt and the main character is a pharaoh who moves around colossal sets. Hordes of slaves working on a gigantic building kneel before him en masse as soon as he appears. Majestic scenes follow, while a soldier dies in battle from an arrow that pierces his forehead. A few close-ups and then the images end without giving the viewer any details about the story. The perfect trailer.
