Film Notes
Astero, directed by Dimitris Gaziadis, was based on a screenplay written by Orestis Laskos who was partly inspired by the novel of Greek author Nirvanas and partly by Hellen Hunt Jackson’s “Ramona”, a romantic tale det among Indians, which had already been adapted for the screen by Griffith.
The appeal of the new “foustanella” or “mountain adventure” genre was very strong, and was responsible for several silent and talkies box office hits. The idealised version of the Greek countryside, which at this time was suffering the effects of world depression, provided an escape from the adverse conditions of every day life. Greek intellectuals had not yet turned either to the urban proletariat’s or the Greek peasantry’s subcultures for inspiration. Film thus portrayed an idealised version of life in the Greek countryside adapting melodramatic stories from the repertory of Greek stage and the foreign film production.
