Film Notes

“Nancy, Hotel de Guise, November 25th, in the year 1983” (introductory title).

A young woman enters a hotel in Nancy after a long day’s work. She hopes to catch an (easily recognizable) film on TV.

But the TV set is bust. Nothing special ensues – an uneventful evening. The young woman meets a quiet young man. Something may be about to develop… Decugis offers a mirror image to Rohmer’s tales (even if Rohmer, too, often adopts a young female protagonist). The diversity of characters observing or ignoring each other opens up a prospect of potential outcomes.
