Film Notes

In the documentary work of Rohmer, Victor Hugo was a direct source of inspiration. The filmmaker made two films about the author: Les Contemplations and Victor Hugo architecte. The Hugolian allusions of Rohmer’s fictional films are implicit but no less profound. “The trip to Jersey,” comments Rohmer in his film Les Contemplations, “did not really renew Victor Hugo’s inspiration because the ocean, after his trip to Brittany in 1836, already figured among his regular themes.” The very same could be said of Rohmer with the coastal landscapes in his films Conte d’été (A Summer’s Tale), Ma nuit chez Maud (My Night at Maud’s), etc., also shot along the Breton coast. Once again, this educational film delves into the thematic and formal origins of Rohmer’s cinematic works.
